Directions:

Since GPS's and google directions may be wrong, follow these direction: The park is west of Lampasas, southeast of San Saba. From the intersection of U.S. Highways 281 and 183 in Lampasas, take FM 580 west 24 miles to Bend and follow the signs 4 miles to the park entrance. From San Saba, take U.S. Highway 190 about 4 miles to FM 580 and follow the signs 13 miles to Bend; follow the signs 4 miles to the park entrance (2 miles of dirt road). The headquarters and main camping are 6 miles past the entrance on the dirt road (unmarked County Road 442). (Access road subject to flooding.) Note:  No gasoline service in Bend.

The CAMPSITES: I have reserved 2 drive and 2 walk in campsites supposedly good for 36 at most (8/site) but we should plan on 6/site or 24.  From the park,

Drive-in sites : "Has picnic table, fire ring, cooking grill, and lantern holder. Potable water is in the area, but not at each site. Composting toilets are located in the area. Sites are Drive up sites, approximately 150 yards from the river. NO hot showers in the park, only a cold water outdoor shower. NO hook-ups of an kind; Self contained RVs are allowed up to 30 feet. No sewage disposal facilities available. Generators must be turned off at 10pm."

Walk-in sites: "These water-only sites are 'on the river & are for Tent camping ONLY. Must Walk-in 30 yards to campsites from parking area. Has picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook. Water in the area, not at each site. Composting toilets are located in the area. There are No hot showers in the park, only a cold water outdoor shower."

Campsite assignment will be done first come- first served from the people that made it into the yes RSVP.

Park Rules: "CHECK IN: All campers are required to check in at the park headquarters before occupying a site. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: Public consumption or display of an alcoholic beverage is prohibited. PETS: Pets must be attended and on a six-foot leash at all times. Pets are not allowed in any park buildings, cabins, or shelters. Customer must provide proof of current vaccinations for each pet entering the park. FIREWOOD: Gathering of firewood is prohibited. ENTRANCE FEES: Entrance fees are in addition to Campsite or Day Use Facility fees. EXCESS VEHICLES: An excess vehicle fee will be charged for all vehicles over the limit of 2 per site. HORSES: For Parks that allow horses - All horses entering the park, must have a negative Coggins test less than 12 months old. SITE NUMBERS: Sites are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Site numbers are not assigned in advance of arrival at the park. WILDLIFE: Feeding of wildlife is prohibited."

COSTS: Its $112 total for the 4 sites and two days.  It will be split evenly between attendees regardless if attending one or both nights.  So if 20 people show up it will be ~$6/person.

FOOD: People should plan for the meals by the carpool or with friends.  I will have a gas grill available for use along with some cooking gear.  Ideally plan on Saturday and Sunday breakfast and Saturday dinner.  We can have Sunday dinner on our way home.

@Tracey, if you feel the need to get some work done at the campsite (um, I hope not!) and there are no electrical outlets, you're welcome to use my car inverter. It plugs into your cigarette lighter and it'll power small devices, battery chargers and some laptops (as long as it's not an energy hog).

If anyone wants to make a long weekend out of it, I plan to leave tomorrow, Thursday morning (NLT 10am), and return Monday evening. Let me know if you need a ride, either round trip or one-way. I can take up to 3 people with gear. My number is (619) 479-2260. I am in NW Houston, so this works best for those of you on the north or west side of town. My plans are to head out early to get some additional hiking in on Thursday afternoon and Friday at OTHER parks/trails in the W/NW Austin area, join up with the HATS group at Colorado Bend SP on Friday late Friday afternoon, and then get some additional hiking in somewhere on Monday. I have a state park pass that'll get us into state parks for free.

    June 19, 2013

    • Tracey

You'll also be forced to hike 20+ miles / day if traveling with Joe ;) (just kidding)

Hey guys! I live in the medical district and love walking around Herman park daily. Any ladies or men out there that want to join me? I just need motivation sometimes to get out there and do it. And I'm new here and don't know anyone, but would love the company! I can go in the mornings or in the evening times! I'm more of a walker than a jogger/runner. Let me know! And it doesn't just have to be one person- the more the merrier!

I'm super excited about hiking a few new trails (to me) at this park. If you've never been there, it's a treat! Here's a video I made a couple of years ago. The last part of it is of Colorado Bend State Park. We spent some time on the Spicewood Springs Trail and then hiked over to Gorman Falls. http://youtu.be/joYICyWD1qg

I'm planning on bringing a few treats to share including adult jello (mojito flavored), baked kale chips and some bacon wrapped stuffed jalapenos. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Cameron just was informed that he will need to go to Dallas for a business trip that week until June 21. He will be able to join us but he will be driving from Dallas to the park. That means I will need to get a ride with somebody else. Would anybody be able to give me a ride, leaving on Friday afternoon? Thank you!!

I know many members of our group don't have full camping equipment, so I've started a thread in the discussions area for equipment sharing on this trip. Please join in if you have any shares to offer or questions about the park and facilities.

A few words for people that have never been to Colorado Bend. The park is further from Lampassas than the 32 miles of the route because one third of the drive is over rough dirt roads. There are no stores or shops once you turn off US183 in Lampassas. Bend Texas, the nearby town, is little more than a post office. Buy all last minute supplies and top off your gas tank on 183. I have been here with several groups and inevitably someone gets there low on gas and has to pay to have fuel brought out. Just top off your tank on 183 to have a worry free weekend.
