Guadalupe Mountains National Park Camping

THE EVENT IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW RSVPS.  SORRY BUT WE ARE FULL.

PEOPLE WHO MADE IT, PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR INFO ON MY ROUTE (IF INTERESTED IN CONVOYING WITH US) AND INFO ON FOOD IF YOU WANT TO JOIN THE GROUP IN THE GROUP MEALS.

This is being co-posted with the CA group: CLICK HERE. If flying in (probably El Paso or Midland) then check with them also for car-rental pooling possibilities.  Just post you interest in the comments box for each post.  As for me, I'll be driving from Houston at ~ 5AM Saturday, Nov 23.  Let me know if you want to caravan with me.

PLEASE BRING SMALL TENTS BUT LARGE ONES ARE OK IF SHARING WITH MULTIPLE PEOPLE. INDICATE IN THE RSVP OR COMMENTS LINES IF SHARING A TENT, OTHERWISE I WILL ASSUME YOU'RE IN AN INDIVIDUAL SMALL TENT.

For the last time we did this camping see:  CLICK HERE

For questions send me an email but if you have more urgent inquiries call me at my cell # at[masked]-1976.

Forecast : CLICK HERE

Guadalupe Mountains National Park WebsiteCLICK HERE

The CAMPSITE: I reserved two group campsites at Pine Springs Campground.  The limit is for 40 people but I expect we can fit only ~28 people since most will not be sharing tents.  . NO SHOWERS IN THE PARK, so plan on sponge baths and look forward to the shower on Tuesday in Carlsbad.

CAMPSITE COSTS: It will be 12$/person for the trip plus your park entrance fee per car and food cost if joining in on the food sharing.

FOOD: There are really no nearby places to go out to eat and so we should plan to cook our own meals.  I am thinking of planned group dinners for Sunday and Monday.  For Tuesday we can eat at a restaurant in Carlsbad after our visit to Carlsbad Caverns National Park.  Once we have a final RSVP list I will send info on this.

Lee (aka Mario Andretti, aka the boy scout, aka... well, never mind) is having a birthday next week. We're gonna have a little party for him this Saturday, December 14th at Drink Houston (I-10 and Silber) starting at 10:00 pm, meeting in the Retro Room (as he puts it, because it's easier to meet in the Old Folks Room... he should know!). Would be great if everyone from the Guadalupe Mountains trip could come... and bring a friend or three!

The winter storm required a bit of rearranging of our schedule, which was fun in itself, but also created what was likely a once-in-lifetime surreally beautiful and rewarding experience. Thanks all!!

The winter weather made camping even more of an adventure. This was my first time setting up my tent while it was snowing! The ice formations, snowy trails, and clean crisp air gave the park a uniquely beautiful and surreal appearance. Thanks Hugo for figuring out how to make it all work despite the weather. Thanks Seta for finding us a refuge on the first night. Thanks to the cooks for the great food. It was really great to meet everyone and I hope to cross trails with you again sometime.

The camping was fun, the winds were high and the temps were below freezing. Thanks be to God, I had enough of the right gear to keep comfortable.

From the park ranger. Hwy 54is closed from El Paso to the NM. State line. It's voluntary but he saw multiple cars in doth on his way to work this am. It's starting to sleet again here.

We have room too, for one...leaving with Hugo at his place at 5a. We should have sufficient trunk room (new Buick La Cross). My email has been down most of the day...should be back up now but I missed today's emails. If anyone emailed me with anything urgent that's not posted in the meetup, please send again.

Anyone concerned about the icy road conditions near the park? Might make going around steep winding park roads dangerous in a 2WD? My bags rated 25, but I have a bag liner, insulated pad, and will sleep in heavy clothing -- good enough?

Ok so I don't normally drink but with weather like what we are facing, I might have a couple of shots. I bought some 1800 tequila when I was in Cancun and would like to enjoy it once we have decided not to drive. Is this ok? Also, don't laugh but can someone tell me what to drink it with and last but not least, will you help me? Just trying to take out mind off of the weather bit I'm serious.

    2 · November 21, 2013

    • Ronit M.

I don't always drink tequila but when I do I drink is straight. But some good mixers are sprite or 7up

I'm nervous about the wind advisory and I haven't been in 19 degree weather in a very long time. I don't think I mind being cold OR wet but cold AND wet...ugh!

The key is to layer your clothing. At night, you can fill a Nalgene bottle with hot water and throw it in your bag. Just make sure it doesn't leak.

(Suggestion) If the weather is supposed to be particularly nasty on a specific day, that may be a good day to hit the Caverns if the road conditions are safe to drive. Caves stay ~70 degrees year round. :)

Also, I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. This park gets very windy at times, so bring strong tent stakes and something to pound them into the ground with because the ground is hard. I've not stayed at the group campsite before, but I'm assuming the ground will be similar to the individual campsites. Thin aluminum or titanium stakes will bend or break. If your tent is not staked taught, you will be an unhappy camper.

One more suggestion on cold weather clothing -- stick with down, wool, and proven synthetic winter blends. Avoid 100% cotton and denim (jeans) because when you sweat (and you will), it'll lower your body temperature once you cool down and increase your risk of hypothermia. Cotton retains moisture, so you want something that will wick the moisture away so you stay dry. I would also suggest wearing a hat (e.g., skull cap) as your head radiates a lot of heat, so a hat will help retain it.

Everyone should be aware of the signs of hypothermia (Google it before you leave) so they can recognize the early stages in themselves and others.

    Hugo and group...
We plan to go with your convey. We'll be at the Mosaic a bit before 5 am Sat morning. Let us know if you need more plates or anything. Right now we have three going (Suzana, Ronit and me). Leaving the campsite around 9 am Wednesday. Right now we can fit in one more person going and maybe two coming back. I'm swamped at work so not monitoring email very often....but will check late afternoon. The weather will be a challenge. I might do McKittrick Canyon on Tuesday and then join you all for dinner...all is flexible. Cheers, Winnie

Winnie, BTW, be sure to see the Grotto if you have a chance, but if you decide to go up the canyon be aware of two things:
      1. The "land bridge" that takes you up to the summit (near McKittrick CG) provides beautiful overlooks, but is narrow and could be dangerous in high wind conditions as the drop offs on both sides are treacherous.
      2. The gate that leads you into McKittrick canyon closes each evening (I think at 5 or 6pm -- double check to be sure), so if you park your car there you have to get back and drive out before they lock the gates.

All, I have to admit, this is my first time in this type weather. I am willing to come because I want to learn how to camp and have fun in difficult weather. I am trusting the group to assist me with this learning experience. Can't wait to tell my story. I do believe I have the right gear so fear not. And I have been in 19 degree weather but not 19 degrees and wet with wind.

      November 20, 2013

  • Winnie H.

If anyone is interested in carpooling, either leaving early Saturday morning with Hugo or possibly leaving around 7 pm Friday evening and stopping after 5 or 6 hours to split up the trip, I'd be interested. My very reliable CRX is 22 years old and 1400 miles is a bit much for her these days (although she's an amazing trouper) and she pre-dates cruise control so I'l probably rent a car. Hugo...my tent is a 2-person. I hope to try the peak ascent (we'll see...I'm slow but steady). I've hiked and done service work in Guadalupe...incredibly beautiful but potentially dangerous (do not get lost and run out of water, said from experience; now I have a Garmin though).

    Cheers!
    Winnie

Winnie, don't worry about being slow on the ascent. I'm sure I'll be bringing up the back of the pack. And my BFF is 100% boy scout. He'll make sure we stay safe while encouraging us to the top. One of his favorite phrases... Once you do this, no one can take it away from you!

Slow, I think I will get the medal on the uphill climbs. Unfortunately, I have suffered a clot to my lung before and it has left me with a bit of lung damage. I sometimes hike for 60 secs and rest 15. However this was with my heave pack on so maybe without the pack I can go 90, lol. No worries, we will all get there, left right, left right, etc

    • Michelle H.

I will be leaving shortly after breakfast Tuesday morning when I get everything packed up.

      November 11, 2013

  • LyndaTerry

Long Star forgive me for asking so many however, I am really trying to get ready. Do we have sleeping arrangements for Tuesday night? Or will our trip essentially end after visiting the caves? ALso, do you know if we will get to watch the bats leave the caves for the night? Really excited here. I love the outdoors. Believe it or not, my bags are fully packed food and all. I pack for all types of weather so it really doesn't matter to me what the forecast is. Can't wait. I did scale my water bottle down to a 2 L only because it didn't fit in my daypack.

    November 9, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

One more thing - To be clear, I wasn't implying to downsize the amount of water you carry from 3L to 2L. I was simply trying to let you know that the park suggests 1 gal, which is approx. 4L, per person per day and that water is heavy and adds to pack weight. I understand a 3L bladder doesn't fit in your pack, so if you go to a 2L water bottle, you may want to augment that by taking some additional water bottles if you're concerned about dehydration. It's always better to deal with the burden of carrying too much water and having what your body requires vs carrying too little and running out.

Good job in pre-planning for the trip!

Lynda, Hugo will have to verify since I am not 100% sure, but since the camping event is through Weds 9AM, it may mean that the events planned for Tues are a road trip and Tues night will be back in the Pine Springs campground at GMNP.

I've noticed people are leaving at various times on Saturday and I was planning on leaving really early myself. Where will we be meeting up on Saturday and is the meet up time still1:00 PM?

    November 10, 2013

  • LyndaTerry

Thanks again Long Star. You are right 3L is a lot however, I have a muscle condition and my doctor has threatened me regarding dehydration. No worries, I have carried it twice while backpacking the AT in Georgia and the Smokies. Believe it or not, I also carry one bottle of electrolyte replacement as an emergency bottle in case my Platypus runs out I can ration this supply. If I don't drink it during the day I drink it for dinner. Lol, just thinking, maybe my trail name should be Camel.

    November 9, 2013

The park recommends 1 gal/day per person. Water is heavy, but you're right -- you do not want to run out. 3L is a lot (~3/4 gal), but you may want to take a quart of Gatorade along every day for the extra fluid and to replenish your electrolytes.
