H.A.T.s _07_2014 Lone Star Hiking Trail #19 ~15mi

This is it.

This is hike #19 out of 19 that completes the HAT's Trail Quest of the LSHT (Lone Star Hiking Trail).  For how we did it  CLICK HERE.

The Hike:  This one will be a long one and so be prepared with 2+liters of water and a mid-hike snack/lunch.  For those that want to do only ~8 or 10 mi there is a turnaround that I can let you know of.  We will Co-opt the nearby Forest Service road (FS202) to do a figure eight route.  As indicated in the route map, CLICK HERE, we will first do the yellow segment followed by the red.

Gathering Place:  Drive to the LSHT #9 Big Woods Trailhead parking lot.  It is a small lot and so some people will have to park on the roadside nearby.  If planning to just do  8-10 miles then you may want to park on the roadside so that you can leave earlier and not be boxed in.

i was just diagnosed with "fat feet", that is, i have feet like a duck and i'm having trouble finding shoes that are WIDE. does anyone have any suggestions? i'm about to return my 3rd pair of hiking boots to REI.

    February 15, 2014

    • Ken M.

Ann, My suggestion is that you go to L.L. Bean's website and survey women's hiking boots, including the Women's Gore-Tex Cresta Hikers and the Women's Gore-Tex Mountain Treads, Mid-Cut. I'd then call the L.L.Bean customer service number and visit with one their professionals about your situation. I have a narrow foot and L.L. Bean boots have worked wonders for me. L.L. Bean accepts returns for full credit with no questions asked and always provides free shipping. I have been super-pleased with all the hiking gear that I have purchased from L.L. Bean. It's quality. Hope this helps. Ken

Thank you for your suggestions, I actually ordered two pairs on Zappos.com. The first is an extra wide trail runner and the second is a men's hiking book, extra wide. If these don't work out, back they go and I will continue my search.

We showed, hiked, conquered on a beautiful day, in a beautiful place, with a diversified group of beautiful people (a Hugo vision when he imagined this group in the beginning). The after event added icing to a truly memorable day. We are a blessed group.

Great day for a hike; the woods were beautiful, the company good.

oh and thank you Jodi for the water. Therese and Guru, the reason i couldn't get any water was because Jodi said her thing was messed up so she just takes off the top and sucks from the tube. I knew something was wrong, i was about to pass out from sucking so hard (that's what she said)

I did 8 miles because I had to pick up Girl Scout cookies in New Waverly at 12:30pm. I just made it back in time to pick them up. I followed ya'll for 4 miles and then back tracked down the trail and then on the roads to the trailhead. Was there another way to get back to the cars that I was not aware of? I enjoyed the beautiful day today.

Hello, my wife and I are interested in joining. This will be our first hike here in the US but we don't have a lot of experience so we'd like to join anyone who's already more experienced, specially with the route. Is that possible? Is this route ~15mi each way or both ways? Thanks in advance.

    1 · February 10, 2014

    • Dan

15 miles is the total round trip. People do the hike in a loose group. Usually some 'regulars' are near the front and end. So there is always people around. We stop half way to rest and re-couperate. Usually people take a light lunch. This hike is longer than most. Most are 10 miles, so expect some dragging feet, maybe a little bit extra whining. There are often short cuts, so expects an opportunity to hike less than 15 miles.

      3 · February 10, 2014

    • Ricardo

Thanks, Dan! Looking forward to it!

Great way to work off that Valentine's Day chocolate! Looking forward to it! Plus, I've wanted to hike in this region for years... Kudos to the organizers for all their efforts organizing these hikes!

Watch for slick conditions on the south portion of John Warren Road, leading to Trailhead #9, Big Woods, - not unusual at this time of year and it has been wet. This should affect at least one's driving speed on a couple of sharp turns. Not sure about foot traffic. The LSHT Club, including myself, hiked the main Trail this past weekend and it was fairly dry and well-marked. Good luck.

    February 9, 2014

  • Carl J

The attendance is lookin pretty weak...It can't be because of the 15 miles could it?

    2 · February 6, 2014

    • Ken M.

Of course not. Nobody but me could possibly be intimidated by a measly 15 friggin' miles. But I still plan to show, knowing that I still have nine days to come to my senses.

      1 · February 6, 2014

    1 · February 4, 2014

give yourself at least 1 hr and 20min. If you are not good with directions or maps then make it 1hr and 40min.

There is still plenty of time. I sent the rough draft to give the editor time to work it in for space. She has to like the story though. So far, its about 450 or so words. I like it...
