Camping at Mission Tejas State Park

My phone (Tom) in case you get lost:[masked]

This event is only for camping, the hikes are separate events for Saturday and Sunday.  You can stay in a hotel in nearby Crockett and visit the park but RSVP here only if you intend to camp with us.  Camping is for Friday and Saturday.  Mission Tejas  is very small park with no shelters, so this is tent camping only.

Mission Tejas Park site
Mission Tejas map

We will be hiking the Four C Hiking Trial.  It crosses 20 miles through the Davy Crockett National Forest from the Neches River Bluffs in the north to the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area in the south.  We will do the trial over two days.

"The park was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a commemorative representation of Mission San Francisco de los Tejas, the first Spanish mission in the province of Texas, which was established in 1690. Also in the park is the restored Rice Family Log Home, built in 1828 and restored in 1974. The home, is one of the oldest structures in the area. The home served as a stopover for immigrants, adventurers and local residents traveling the Old San Antonio Road across pioneer Texas."

FOOD: I am planning to eat out for breakfast and dinner.  Miss Mollie's Diner, 210 San Antonio Rd in Alto that can accommodate a group for breakfast.  For dinner we can drive to Crockett or Nacogdoches.  Everyone is welcome to prepare their own meals too.

PLEASE NOTE: THE CAMPING AREA WE ARE USING DOES NOT HAVE ELECTRICITY.

CAMPING LIST FOR BEGINNERS: CLICK HERE

The cost for the campsite is $40 for the weekend split between everyone who comes, whether for one or both nights.  There is a $2 entry fee per person to the park unless you have a State Parks Pass.  Drivers may also be subject to an excess vehicle fee of a few dollars.

That picture didn't turn out! I checked my camera three times...I guess whoever took it forgot to press the button. I was disappointed, to say the least.

Great camp-out. Tom did a fantastic job. I particularly enjoyed the small group and the comraderie which resulted.

Hi Tom. I and Luke will arrive to the park around 9.30pm. Do we need a gate code or something. Also what campsites are you at, numbers? Thanks.

I don't know how I let this camping weekend fall off the radar. I've made other plans - damn! Hopefully there will be another camping weekend soon - when it isn't raining that is.

I am a new member who needs to get in some hiking and camping experience before trekking to the Grand Canyon this summer. Will just stay one night, either FrI or Sat. Look forward to meeting everyone.

  • April

Sad to say that I will not be able to go. I'm going to jump on the HATS day hike to help make up for it. Ya'll have fun.

Any carpool from Kingwood? Will share cost. I have all cooking equipment, would love to share my love of cooking outdoors.

    March 9, 2014

    • Gloria C.

April were probably leaving from Kingwood around noon on Friday. I think we're hiking both days so probably will leave around 3 (or so depending on how long Sunday hike takes. You're welcome to join us if that works for you

Things changed last night. I have to help a friend with her special needs daughter Friday. I think I'm going to leave Galveston at 5am Saturday instead.

      April 10, 2014

  • Lizzy Arnina O.

We want to grill Some steaks Friday night. Anybody have any idea how we can accomplish this without an actual grill ?

    April 9, 2014

    • Tom P.

Walmart and many other stores should have "throwaway" grills in stock this time of year. Made essentially out of heavy foil and good for a weekend but not much more.

      April 10, 2014

  • Lizzy Arnina O.

P.S We are only camping Friday night (not doing the hike) It's a bit last minute ,but we can all organize something? maybe bring some snack and drinks we can all share? If anyone is interested let me know! since we are only staying Friday night, we don;t mind bringing a cooler!

Dear camping friends, I can't believe that the first good opportunity I have had in several years to go camping and we have the best weather possible and I have had the unforunate flareup of a medical condition that I have not had a problem with in a long time. My friends said to wait to cancel but I can't see how, at this point with the state I have been in, that it would be possible as camping is quite physical and does not have the same conveniences. I am on limited diet as well. So I think I better pull my RSVP now.

    April 9, 2014

    • Liz

Thanks Jim. I'm so sad !! :( great weather for your camp out!

Anyone want to carpool from Sugarland? I'm going to be getting off work at about 5pm and would be happy to drive, I'd rather have a couple folks to make the long drive nicer (and save on gas of course) - I can fit 3 others, please reply if you want to join in

I'm on the fence about carpooling. I live in Galveston and work in League City. I get off at 3:30 on Friday. May decide to leave at 5am on Saturday.

      April 9, 2014

  • April

I have a Honda Element and enjoy camping in my car. Was wondering if that's possible. If it's too inconvenient for the group , I have a tent of course.

    April 9, 2014

  • Gloria C.

I'm looking at the Mission Tejas State Park map and the numbered campsites all appear to have electricity. Can you clarify where we're suppose to set up our tents? Thanks.

    April 8, 2014

    • Tom P.

We are in the Group camping area. Plenty of room but no electricity.

Is it OK to arrive a little earlier on Friday than 5pm? Also, I am a new to the group and this is my first outing. Last weekend, I stretched myself to 7.5 miles on the lone star trail and not sure I will be able to do the full 10 on Saturday. Will there be all skill levels of hikers? Should we bring firewood?

    April 3, 2014

    • Kelli G.

Cheryl, I am new to this group as well. I am also usually in the back group and sometimes turn around. I will try to find you at the campsite and maybe we can hike together.

      April 6, 2014

    • Cheryl F.

Hi Kelli, Thanks! that would be great! I'm planning to hike this Wednesday again with another group. So I'm building up my stamina. Hope to do the whole 10 miles. Looking forward to meeting you and everyone.

We should have a BBQ Friday night!

    2 · March 31, 2014

  • Tom P.

We could cook breakfast at camp, something easy like breakfast tacos, if someone would take on the task of coordinating it. It would be more fun than going out. I can bring a camp stove and various pots and pans to use. There will be plenty of people around to help We just need someone to coordinate. Any volunteers? Let me know!

    March 31, 2014

  • Jodi A.

I'm probably going to drive up Saturday morning and was wondering if anyone wants to carpool. I'll pay for the campsite for the whole weekend, tho. Looking forward to this and hopefully it won't rain.

  • Miranda M.

I love camping. This will be my 2nd meet up with this group and my 1st camping trip in TX. Not sure what to expect, but can't wait to see more of the local outdoors. If anybody can give me some "must brings" unique to this location it would be very helpful since I just moved here from Idaho.

    March 7, 2014

    • Tom P.

We are car camping, you only need a day pack for the hike. There are no special facilities at the Tejas that I am aware of. There is a swimming lake at Ratcliff campground for after the hike on Sunday.

      1 · March 10, 2014

    • Tom P.

The whole park is expected to reopen the first week in April. If it does not, we will miss out on part of the trail but can still have a great hike.

      March 25, 2014

  • Cita B

Hi Gloria, just got back from 7-day in the caribbean, please email me if you are still interested in carpool. Thanks

i haven't signed up yet for this event, but came someone tell me if there will be any "pre-teen" kids on this hike. my friend might want to join me, he has two boys around 11-13 and was wondering if there might be other kids around.

    thanks
    ann

Tom, I will only be staying at the camp for Saturday night. I will pay the whole amount, but just wanted to let you know.

I really want to make this!!! My mother is in the hospital right now, so all of the friends I've made since I started this group in December I miss you all. Hopefully she'll recover soon and my life will get back to normal and I can continue hiking.

    1 · March 13, 2014

    • Tom P.

Our best wishes for her speedy recovery.

      2 · March 13, 2014

  • Lyra S.

Is there a bathroom at the campsite??

    1 · March 11, 2014

    • Tom P.

There are two bath houses at the park. Each one is a short walk from our site. Exactly how short a walk I cannot say.

      1 · March 11, 2014

  • David

What time Saturday morning will you start the hike? If I head to the camp site after work it won't be until 9:00 PM that I make camp. Thinking I might get off early but if not maybe I can make it in the next morning?

    March 7, 2014

    • David

I love East Texas! Remember camping out in Damn B and Sam Rayborn as a kid, and the big thicket. Seriously thinking of going on this.

      March 7, 2014

    • Tom P.

David. The hikes are now posted, we are starting at 10AM to leave time for those who want to come from town. You are welcome to arive late at camp. There is no gate at the park so just drive on up Friday night.

I may be able to swing in Friday PM after work. I will update when I can. This will be my first Meetup. Very excited!

I am tentatively saying yes--my busy season for work is beginning and it's likely I'll be at sea. If not, though, I want to get my name into the thing early. If I do go, I will be cooking and bringing my meals.
