Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center ~7mi

Summer is coming up fast, and the weather is already getting hot.  Don't forget to bring plenty of water; 1-2 liters should be sufficient.

My phone in case you get lost:[masked]

A quick disclaimer: Park rules say no pets/dogs are permitted on the trails, so please leave Fido at home.

The Hike: I was looking in the HATS archives and there were a bunch of hikes I missed that were done before I joined.  I want to begin a series of catchup hikes for myself, newer members, or those who want to repeat.  We will be hiking almost all of the trails at the park beginning with a piece of the Palmetto Trail and eventually ending with the White Oak Trail, the procession of trails is listed below.  This should be a relatively easy hike, each trail is typically less than one mile in length and so breaking off if necessary is very possible. For a map of the hike, CLICK HERE (Each trail ended up being listed twice for some reason, it is a mystery!)

Trail Conditions: Approximately 80-90% of the hike will be on paved trails.  Certain parts of the trails, both paved and unpaved, are prone to minor pooling of water if it rains with any sort of strength in the days leading up to the hike.  We may encounter uncomfortably deep puddles of water so we will be skirting around them using the nearby unkempt long grass and stuff;  I would suggest you wear long pants for this one that are lightweight and dry quickly (read: not jeans) - Sneakers should be fine, but I still suggest hiking shoes.

Trail Route:

Start > Cypress Boardwalk Trail > High Bank Trail > Magnolia Trail > River Birch Trail > Spring Creek Trail > Jones Bender Trail > Grapevine Trail > Cypress Overlook Trail > River Birch Trail > Old Logging Trail > White Oak Trail > Palmetto Trail > Start

Total = ~6.5 miles

Gathering Place:

I will probably be there pretty early, look for me wearing a Magellan brand hat and  wearing a Camelbak.  I don't have a distinctive blue jeep unfortunately, I'll be in a Silver Mazda6.

We are meeting at the parking lot closest to the playground and barbecue grills.  When you reach the address above, keep driving to the very end of Kenswick Dr, then turn left onto the park road and follow it until you reach a second parking lot on your left hand side.  Just past that is a 3rd and 4th parking lot in a circle formation.  We will meet next to the restrooms at this location.

Here is a record of our hike from today:
    http://www.mapmyhike.com/workout/590094057

Due to 2 different trails being closed off for flooding we didn't quite hit our target of 6.5-7miles, but we still managed 6 out of it. I'm proud of ya'll who forged the Spring Creek trail :D

The hike was "interesting" because of all the water on the trails. David you did a great job. Thanks for the organization and thanks for picking Pappasito's for the after party. Great Day.....

Do be careful when entering the park, there's a police car parked at the entrance, I'm not sure if it's occupied though

The hike is still on - rain chance is only 60% and even if it does start the radar looks very mild. See you all in about 3 hours!

I've also decided not to because of the weather and because this week was much worse than I thought it would be when I RSVP'd.

  • David

Hi everyone. If the rain chance is at 70% or higher I will consider rescheduling the hike - Please check back at round 7AM and I will make a comment one way or another :)

    1 · May 30, 2014

    • David

BTW, I say consider since I'm actually a fan of somewhat inclement weather, I would want to see if it's raining and if it is how hard before making the call!

    David,

Are you going to cancel the hike in the morning if the forecast for rain is then 60% or greater? If so, what time in the morning should we check for your final decision? Thanks.

    Ken
