Herman Park and Rice University ~10 Miles

Based on some common sense requests, I've changed the hike to be along a more shade route.

Let's start the Fourth off with a bang.  A hike around Hermann Park then among the tall trees at Rice University.  About 10 miles.  The hike will be mostly on crushed granite, hard packed dirt and pavement.  There will be a significant amount of shade but some time in the sun too.  So please take the proper precautions of a hat and sunscreen.   Bring at least 2 liters of water.

If you get lost or need assistance, call Tom at[masked]

The route is not set yet but will look somehting like the link below.

Park either at the Zoo or the new lot on Herman Drive.   We will meetup at 9:00 AM then leave promptly at 9:15 AM.  If you're late, wait at the meeting spot and we'll pick you up in a short time while looping through the park.

Afterward we can go for lunch at Cafe Express at 5601 Main St. (That is in the basement of the Museum of Fine Arts, but admission is not required.  Just go down the stairs in front of the new building.)

Anybody want to carpool from Spring/Woodlands area?

I wish I'd seen this earlier. I'm at 45 and Richey. If anyone knows any areas closer than The Woodlands to walk around here, I'd like to know about them. I'm trying for 50 miles/ week now, and I hate doing most of it in the gym.

Tony, there is a park in The Woodlands, Mitchell Preserve Nature Trail...about half way through the two mile loop, you can take a detour and connect to the Lone Star Trail System which has hundreds of miles of connecting trails. That's probably best in this immediate area...

A great hike! That is nice to meet new friends. My dog and I enjoyed the hike with the group. The doggie (Mickey) got "flat tire" so we ended at the zoo. Mickey feels happy now. :-) We look forward to the next event.

It was great to meet you Amy. I'm glad that Mickey has recovered from his flat tire - that was too precious!

My first hike with group certainly will not be my last. Great fun event with nice bunch of fellow hikers

I have changed the hike to a more shaded route because not everyone shares my penchant for hiking in the sun during the full heat of summer.

You did a great job on rain control. I'm sure all your buds, including me, appreciate your masterful efforts.

Sorry we couldn't make it. Weather and United didn't cooperate and didn't arrive back in Houston until 3:30 am this morning.

If you're not hiking the whole distance, there's a small group of us that will be staying within Hermann Park. When the hike leaves the park, a few of us will head to Gratifi to have brunch on the patio. (We'll have our dogs with us and they can't get into Cafe Express.)

I'd like to blame it on the dogs, but the truth is, I'm the one who doesn't want to go all 10 miles!

I have not done this before, but I am trying to challenge myself, try new things, etc... It was a promise I made to myself when I retired at the end of May. Looking forward to starting the 4th of July with all y'all. See you in the morning. Will there be a map of the route that I can print out in case I get so far behind I can no longer see a group of 81 people walking ahead of me?
