The Heat Is On Half Marathon Hike ~13.1 miles

To celebrate the major feature of Houston's climate, the summer heat, and the endurance we hardy Houstonians proudly exhibit, let's do an extra long walk.  We will meet early at Cleveland Park so we can finish before the worst of the day.

Please note the earlier than usual start time.  This is a long hike and the plan is to be off the trail and out of the heat by Noon because the last 3/4 of a mile is in full sun. We will start walking at 7:15.  If you are running late, meet us at the first gathering point or call me for help.

The hike is in three stages:

1.  Hike along Memorial Drive and the golf course loop to the Arboretum Visitors Center where there is water and bathrooms.  This is about five miles and mostly in the sun.

2.  After a break follow the Arboretum outer loop trail, leave the park toward 610 and follow the sidewalk to Post Oak then along the back streets to San Felipe and on to Willowick.  This is about four miles and mostly shaded.  We will take a break at the Shell station to resupply on water, Gatorade and snacks.

3.  The last four miles will be a tour of the partly shady River Oaks streets before hitting the Buffalo Bayou trail for the sunny last 3/4 of a mile.

This is a long hike and our members hike at different speeds so the group may get spread apart.  We ask everyone to bring a copy of the map for reference, so if you get separated it will be easy to find the gathering points.

Tom, this year's Heat-Is-On-Half-Marathon Hike was superbly planned and perfectly executed. Thank you. To cross the finish line was exhilarating.

My iPhone tracked this at 13.3 miles. So everyone give yourself an extra pat on the back.

My husband & I may join you; however we may not go the full 13.1 miles! Can we bring our two small leashed dogs along?

    August 4, 2014

    • Janey

Suzanne, just in case you are new to hiking as well as the group, keep in mind if your dogs haven't been walking with you 5 or more miles 3-4 times a week for the last several months it would not be wise to bring them. The heat and humidity are as hard on dogs as they are on humans and small dogs have to expend 3 times the energy to keep up.

    • Suzanne

Thx for the heads up! We are only planning to walk a few miles just to get acquainted with the group. The dogs do walk a couple of miles every day, but since this starts so early I think they will be fine heat wise.

I'll be better prepared this time, probably won't make the full 13.5 miles, but I gotta get out there again.....do you think it'll be warm?

    August 7, 2014

    • Ann Epstein V.

That last remark was tongue in cheek, I may be clueless but even I know it's hot out there.

The walk back along Memorial from the Arboretum to Cleveland Park will make a total hike of ~8.5 miles. The outer loop of the Arboretum will add a bit to that.

I just join in and this is my first hike with you all. Looking forward to see you.

I unfortunately won't be able to join you all Saturday as I have unexpected house guests. Enjoy!l

You guys have fun out there! I had previously committed to another meet up that same day and would like to keep my word, otherwise I would have loved to join you all.

Is there sufficient parking at Cleveland Park on Scotland for everyone to park?

    1 · July 28, 2014

    • Ken M.

Tons of parking. Big Tom is a planner deluxe.

      3 · July 28, 2014

    • Tom P.

There is a lot of street parking there, but also a lot of parkers. Some people may have to park a bit from the starting point and walk back. We all found a place last year and I trust we can this year too. As a fall back, some could park at St Thomas High School and wait for the group to pass by.

Tom, I was going to print the route map but don't see it.

    July 9, 2014

    • Tom P.

Fitting for a giant sized hike, don't you think?

      1 · July 12, 2014

    • Ken M.

      Indeed.

      July 12, 2014

  • Winnie H.

Tom. Nice map (Explorer wouldn't open but Firefox did)! I'm going and looking forward to it but do you know the approximate percentages of the surfaces... concrete, asphalt and/or dirt/crushed granite?

    July 12, 2014

    • Tom P.

The Memorial Loop is hard packed dirt. The Arboretum outer loop is more or less forest trails. The remainder, most of the hike, will be on pavement. So wear those running shoes.
