oh, Hey, I just recalled this from last weekend...
EVERYONE-- you may want to bring extra fresh water for drinking/cooking... I was at huntsville a week or two ago and they had a "boil all water before consuming" warning up. Just fyi!

    February 15, 2013

    • Mary

Thank you for the head's up. We were just talking about whether we should bring water or not. I guess we will.

Hey Mary, I know the check out time at huntsville is around two, but is there a check in time? I'm just wondering if we get there before or around lunch if we'll be able to get a site and cook lunch or not.

Sorry I am sick. I don't think camping in the cold will be a good idea for me.

Walter, Clancy, and all - I just sent an email with information including my name and how we all will find each other. Let me know if you don't get the email. Between that email and the posting above, I think you folks should have all the info you need; but let me know if you have questions or comments. --Mary

    Hi Mary,
We will be arriving before 5. What reservation name should we ask for when we get there?

    February 15, 2013

    Hey you all,

For anyone who’s interested, I thought we could do a pot luck dinner Saturday evening. I’m bringing gumbo (made with chicken, a little spicy) with Basmati rice. Since refrigeration is limited, we can do an ice run. Also, it may be helpful to bring food that doesn’t require refrigeration or can also be eaten for breakfast. Jim and I are also bringing a Coleman stove.

+ 1. Also I am bringing my coleman stove, too, so we'll have more than 1. I am up for a pot luck! I have only boiled water on my stove before.

So I kind of jumped the gun with my RSVP - sorry gang. My husband actually had a weekend full of plans for V-day and the REI garage sale, so he said another time. Poo, I was so excited to meet you all!

Thanks Mary! That sounds very exciting about your trip. I might ask you some questions as it gets closer! We are nervous about being acclimated to the altitude, but trying to get used to that in Houston will be a hopeless task. I think on Sunday my husband wants to start off at Memorial Park with a shorter 5 mile or so hike so we can get used to having our packs on. We run and do strength training at the gym, but this type of activity will work different parts of our bodies so we want to prepare a little before going out with a group of people.

      Hi Cyndi –

FYI: I don’t know if you’d be interested, but I plan on leading progressively more challenging trips over the coming months. The intent is to prepare for a challenging summer trip. In March, I plan to lead a 20+ mile hike in Beuscher/Bastrop (see link below). I also hope to lead trips to Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains in April and May, respectively, to get some elevation. At least one will be a backpacking trip if not both. However, these trips will only be a night or two to accommodate busy schedules.

Hi Mary, I just tried to reserve a site for the 16th for my husband and me, and there were no campsites left. Have you already reserved?

    February 8, 2013

    • Mary

This is a really good topic to discuss. Having a bunch of people not show up and sticking the rest of the group (or the leader!) with the extra cost is a remote but constant threat.

I want to say this: If people only changed their RSVPs from Yes to No for legitimate reasons (work schedule change, relatives you don’t see often suddenly decide to visit, you get sick, etc.), this will probably never be an issue because having a small percentage of no shows will not cause the cost per person to rise significantly...

      February 11, 2013

    • Mary

I think it’s a nice luxury for people to have knowing they can RSVP yes for an event that requires reservations and can change it later for good reasons without having the rest of the group get annoyed at them. Also, that’s one of the benefits of doing an activity as a group. Not only does it keep the cost per person down, it acts like a kind of insurance policy protecting those who have real reasons change their RSVPs. The rest of the group can absorb the cost while still paying less per person.

I hope by raising awareness, this will prevent any problems; however, if it does become a problem, we may have to come up with some sort of strategy that may include a ban list or having people make their own reservations (making it more costly and losing the’ insurance policy’ aspect), but I hope it doesn’t come to that.

Planning on being there for the 8am Sun morning hike and will RSVP back before 2/13 deadline if work schedule allows for Sat 5:00pm arrival for camp out too! At this point I have one guest who is planning to come with me for the hike only not the campling.

    January 29, 2013

    • Mary

Awesome. You're welcomed to arrive any time Friday night. You can show up before or after 5 pm. I put that in there to give you folks a heads up on the latest Jim and I expect to show up. (Hehas to work that morning.)

      January 30, 2013

    • Mary

Also, you can decide to camp with us after the RSVP date, but you'll have to make your own reservations for your own campsite at that point (it's easy to do). On February 13, I'll calcuate how much each person owes and let everyone know ahead of time.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
