Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - International Hiking Adventure #1.

I AM RESTARTING THE ONCE A YEAR (AT LEAST) INTERNATIONAL HIKING TRIP IDEA BY RE-DOING THE INCA TRAIL. AND IT LOOKS LIKE MORE THAN ONE DECIDED TO JOIN ME THIS TIME

THIS IS BEING CO-POSTED WITH THE CA GROUP: CLICK HERE

PERMITS ARE SOLD OUT FOR THE INCA TRAIL MAY 27TH DEPARTURE.  Others wishing to join should be thinking about one of two options:

#1.  the Moonstone Trek GROUP departure on May 26th because that doesn’t require Inca Trail Permits, or

#2.  perhaps a CUSTOM Moonstone Trek departure on May 27th so you can at least all tour Machu Picchu together on the same day, May 31st.  A custom departure on May 27th would also allow your friends to join the Sacred Valley Tour with the Great Garcia Group, scheduled for May 26th.  I ma leaving the instuctions below since you may need to do something similar if joining one of the options.

1. Review the core plan below and then decide if you will just do that or add-on or extend your trip before or after it.  As for myself I am just doing the core trip with one day in Lima (to try ceviche). CLICK HERE for my flight itinerary and to get a base fare to compare to.  If you will go beyond the core trip then you may need to contact our travel outfit for advice and to confirm availability of desired trip.  Contact info for travel outfit is:

2. Make a flight reservations.  I used  the airlines sites themselves to get a trip reservation.  I recommend trying travel sites like orbitz and expedia and compare to the airline's own websites to make sure your are getting the best deal.  Note that you may need to do the multi-city options if you want to adjust stay times at different stops.  Since we are reserving very early some of the  travel sites like orbitz may behave funny and so you may be better off reserving with airline websites themselves.  Also to avoid the hassle of taxis , I am just using Andean Treks for pickup and dropoffs from the airports and hotels.

3. Make booking arrangements with Andean Treks.  They request the following:

· Trip Application Form – Passport name, number, and birth date must be copied exactly. These are used to purchase certain tickets and permits and must match your passport precisely or entry can be denied.

· Credit Card Form - We will take a non-refundable $350/person deposit on your trip cost.  *You may call-in the CC# if you prefer not to send it over the web, but please fill-out the rest of the form and submit it so we have your signature on-file.

· Passport copies, emailed or faxed.  Note:  If anyone needs to renewtheir passport, scan a copy of your old passport first, before sending it out for renewal. This is important.

For hotel options see Daisy's note below (I'll be staying at the Andes de Americas):

Hotels

Attached you’ll find our Cuzco Hotels document which will enable you to see a variety of hotels with different pricing which are available to you.  Let me know your top picks when you book, as they’re being reserved fast for May dates which are right around the corner.  For the sake of giving you a good solid quote, I’ve selected the Andes de America which is a larger hotel and often handles groups.  It’s mid-range, so it might be the case some members would be wanting to upgrade to something more fancy.  We can work with this model too.  Andes de America is a good baseline though, at $59/person/night in double-occupancy rooms.  Those arriving May 25th will need 3 nights, thus, the rate is $177/person for these 3 nights.  Light breakfasts are included.

Optional upgrades: The Picoaga hotel in the nice Colonial rooms would be a lovely upgrade, and the double-occupancy rate is $100/person/night, so $300/person for the three night-stay your group is going to start with.  Feel free to look at the other hotels on the attached Cuzco Hotels document and I’ll see if they’re available when you book.

4. Let me know when you have successfully completed the above and then I can mark you as "paid" as a way to indicate you are fully onboard.

Park Info WebsiteCLICK HERE

The Core Plan: The core of the plan is to do the 5 day and 4 night hiking/camping journey along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu:

1. Saturday & Sunday, May 25-26, 2013. We start arriving in Cusco, Peru according to our own travel arrangements.   These two days are mainly for acclimatization and you'll really need them.  I can come up with things to do around Cusco, if not doing any of the paid tours, when we finalize things.

2. Monday - Friday, May 27-31, 2013. We do the Inca Trail. CLICK HERE for itinerary details.

3. Saturday, June 1, 2013. We depart from Cusco according to our own travel arrangements.

Optional Add-on Examples:

Lake Titicaca info:  CLICK HERE and HERE.

Cusco Side Trips: CLICK HERE

Amazon Jungle: CLICK HERE

For other choices or to discuss with the travel outfit:  CLICK HERE. I myself did the "Empire fo the Incas" tour with the Amazon tour add-on and found it to be a good way to see a lot of Peru if you have ~2.5 weeks to spare.

COSTS: Not counting your roundtrip flight and any add-ons or extended stays you may have, Daisy qoutes the following:

Summary

Inca Trail & Machu Picchu (4night/5Day option!)

$794/person is the 12 passenger or greater rate for the PRIVATE CUSTOM INCA TRAIL TREK

$110/person is the Inca Trail Permit and Machu Picchu Ruins entry permit

$44/person will be charged to those requesting a rental winter-weight sleeping bag (ThermaRest pads included free for everyone)

TREK & MACHU PICCHU TOTAL:  $948 /person

Mid-range hotel in Cuzco: $177/person for 3 nights

Inca Trail & Machu Picchu: $948 /person with sleeping bag rental

Total: $1125/person

Do any of you want to meet up for lunch or dinner this Saturday and reminisce or tell some of us who didn't get to go about your Peru trip? That way, Taylor will be spared a tortuous meeting alone with me someday...

  • Suzanne J.

I was there several yrs ago...did not hike the trail leading to MP but hiked/climbed all the trails within the ruins...those alone are pretty good and steep w/awesome views ...got my exercise for the day to say the least. You guys will have a great time...I'd go again but not enuf vacation.

    1 · May 13, 2013

  • Jodi A.

I did this hike two years ago with my daughter and it is so beautiful! I would do it again but joined the group too late; looking forward to next year's adventure.
Wanted to wish you all well! The scenery is breathtaking and although the hike was challenging (i.e. hard) it was worth every minute of sore muscles!
Beware of the guinea pig on the menu in Cusco; it's considered a delicacy.

    From Scott Magelssen:
Meera Raghavendra and I will be sampling Peruvian fare at the Lemon Tree restaurant next Friday, May 10, at 6:00, and we'd love to meet any other interested Machu Piccu travelers there. Are you interested? Could you forward the invitation to others on our trip? Significant others are invited; my wife Fran will join us.

Joined in too late for the Inca Trail group...I will be with the Moonstoners. Gonna finalize details and talk to Daisy again tomoro. Will arrive Cuzco Friday 5/24, leave there Monday 6/3. This will be superfine.

    Will be in Canada :-(

  • Hugo

Message from Daisy for the undecided " wanted you all to know is that there are only 109 permits left for this departure! We consider this low, so this means, if you have any friends who are on-the-fence and thinking about joining, they should activate IMMEDIATELY by sending in their Trip App., CCAuth. form, and passport copy so I can at least purchase their Inca Trail Permit before they sell-out. For the 15 of you who have already signed-up, your Inca Trial Permits are all purchased. (Hurray!) It’s impossible to tell how long the May 27 permits will last but most likely they’ll be sold-out by the end of next week but it could easily be sooner or later than this."
