I just wanted to say that this was the best 4th of July ever! The hikes and the views were spectacular and everyone was so much fun to be around! Thank you Hugo! Thank you!!!!! :D

I hope the group is having a great time. We are going to Yosemite later this month. Let me know any tips you might have for this time of year.

Make sure to check the CA group fro additional comments and photos. One recommendation I have to avoid crowds or at least to get a parking spot is to go before ~9am or on weekdays. Crowds appear to be the greatest after 9AM and on weekends.

Just found out I have a broken foot. Doctor is optimistic I could still be ready to hike Yosemite. Hopefully everything goes well

Josh and I have never taken a vacation in 12 years, and we've never been to California. We set aside two weeks from June 24-July 8 to spend in California. We have had some expenses come up that are going to press us hard on this trip, so we need to do everything on the cheap. We want to spend our money on seeing beautiful places...not on the car and a place to sleep. I'm looking for ideas from you guys. The hostels I have seen are pricier than some hotels here, and the car rental alone for the lowest end vehicle will be $500. I know this isn't much for some, but it is a lot for us. Any ideas on how I can get the costs down more? I've been doing research, and I'm getting discouraged. I know there has to be a way for us to pull this off.

My friends have used AirBnB..which is a level up over couch surfing.

I had never heard of that, but I just checked out the site. That's pretty cool! www.airbnb.com

Can I still get on the van pool list?

    March 4, 2013

    • Hugo

Remember to get a flight to SFO or SJC before noon on July 3 so that the ride fro the vanpool works out.

      April 10, 2013

    • baou t.

So be in SF before noon? Not a problem, just want to make sure before booking. Thanks!

the cheapest flight i've found for this is ~$400 right now. does anyone know if theres usually a better sale later on or should i go ahead and buy now? usually i'm able to get deals around $200 so thats why i'm asking. lol any advice would be appreciated!!

    April 10, 2013

    • Andrea

you should go for it. The flight tickets probably won't be any cheaper around summer Holidays!

      1 · April 10, 2013

    • Dennis S.

I agree being on July 4th weekend you should book a ticket while you can. Prices will go up.

Just getting into this. Yeah! Would like to hear Houston folks plans for air tickets. I will proly not tag on days before or after. In that case how do we get from San Fran(?) Airport to/from the Lodge. Rental car / Public transport?

    That is tempting...
Why not take a train then bus into the area and backpack in? Did that a few years ago, starting at White Wolf, spent two days backpacking towards the valley, then camped out at the edge, swimming in the pools there, then hiked down into the valley and took a bus back out. Good times, and free!

    January 7, 2013

    • Hugo

Roughing it is not what I have in mind for this trip. I like my showers, soft bed, and warm meals :-) The day hikes will give us sufficiently spectacular views.

      January 7, 2013

    • Pete B

Hi Richard; been to Yosemite several times and backpacked in High Sierra as I used to live in LA. I may be able to fly on the Saturday of the week before the hike to LA (Jun 29th) and take the Amtrak and hike towards the valley starting at White Wolf. Thats an interesting idea!

Hugo, I "might" be interested in my own room. Do you know if I can get an special price as part of the group?

    January 22, 2013

But I can move you into the 4 girl dorm if that will make you more comfortable?

When will we know who's "in" for this trip? Thanks!

    January 10, 2013

you will know in less than 1 week from now and, from the looks of it, all the TX people who have RSVPed so far into the waitlist will be let in.

I've been wanting to do this hike for a long time.

If you plan to hike at half dome please register to win the lottery otherwise you can't hike at half dome due to the limit of permit per day. Everyone in your group can register and so is a better chance to get a permit. Yosameti is spectacular and unforgettable place

    January 8, 2013

    • Hugo

Half Dome is not part of the plan this time.

Something like 90% of visitors go only to the valley and immediate area, but there is an incredible wealth of amazing vistas in the nearby area. If anyone is interested, let me know. Its about time for a return visit for me!

Yosemite is one of my absolute favorite places to visit. Did a week long solo backpack trip along the north rim last September. I'd love to sign-up for this but timing is no good :(
