The night hikes we have done have been a blast! I'm going to test out having some weekly in-city evening hikes on Thursdays starting at 6pm. The first will be Memorial Park. These hikes will generally be about 6 miles long and end at about 8:30pm. We will do a brief meet and greet at 5:45 and begin the hike at 6:00pm.

Jennifer's Number:  [masked]

I prefer our hikes be off of the sidewalk for the most part. Areas like the Terry Hershey and Memorial Park dirt trails are great. If you have some suggestions for other places, please let me know. I look forward to seeing you all!

I have been so impressed with some of our newer members and how we have all "sucked it up" while facing new challenges. Thank you, everyone, for making this group what it is. Love you guys. :-)

If you are going backpacking this weekend, you might consider hiking with your pack tonight.

Since it's such an awesome day, and we have the Photoshop workshop coming up...I'm going to get there at about 4:30 to take some photos of textures and backgrounds in the late afternoon light if anyone wants to join me. People can say what they like about Texas Summer heat, but our winters sure make up for it!

Woohoo! I'm ready to hit the dusty trail tonight. Yippee Ki-Yay!!! I called IHOP at 6508 Washington Avenue, Houston, TX 77007-2113. The manager is reserving the private room for us. He is calling in extra cooks and waitresses to take care of us. They are coming in just for us, so let's make a good showing! :-) A Colorado Omelet with hashbrowns and pancakes is calling me name...

  • Jennifer B.

Will everyone be ok with IHOP again? If so, I am going to call them tonight so they can schedule an extra cook and waitress and save the spare dining room area for us.

sorry, this is my first hike with group. you mentioned IHOP, we meeting there after the hike?

      January 22, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

Yes...about 40 of us went there last time. They gave us our own room, and we had a good time eating and getting to know each other better. The after hike eating sessions are a great way to get ideas and flesh out future events!

What do I need to bring? Can I bring a friend? What is a good shoe to wear. tennis shoes ok?

    January 22, 2013

    • Gary M.

Hi, Amelia. Bring a friend, by all means. Tennis shoes should be fine if you don't own any light hiking or trail shoes. Also, a headlamp from somewhere like Academy or Target is nice, though you can get by with a flashlight.

I am recovering from two broken feet. I can walk again, without limping YAY...but was wondering if these night hikes are like a leisurely hike? I just need to take it easy until I fully recover. 6 walking miles is ok, just wondering the intensity. Thanks.

    January 21, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

we meet right where the map says "You Are Here." We will leave at 6pm. But the last time I said 6, we didn't leave until 6:15. Everyone, please do not plan to get there right at 6. If you are late, we cannot wait. It is disrespectful to the people who are ready to go on time. Thank you! :-)

I would like to come; just not sure if I could last for six miles! I will work up to that. 3 sounds more my fitness level for now.

Cynthia, I felt the same way in the beginning. Jennifer encouraged me to try it. I did and met some wonderful people of all fitness levels. The time flew. Consider the hike as a long walk with friends. Welcome to the group Cynthia!

Cynthia, I'm recovering from two broken feet, I am going to give it a shot, maybe we can walk together and encourage each other? (slower pace?) :) - Lynne

What about the shoes with "toes"? Does anyone have an opinion on those?

    January 20, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

One of our guys learned the hard way that the toe shoes are not great on Texas trails. You will feel every rock through them, and your feet will be hamburger by the end. They are great an asphalt and completely rock free trails, but not in most of the places I schedule hikes at.

  • Gary M.

Hi. If its dry out, and it should be, looks to be gorgeous weather, a good pair of tennis shoes is fine (even if it's wet you will just muddy them up, so old comfy pair is great). A headlamp is very useful, though you can make do with a flashlight. It is nice to have your hands free. Wear layers of clothes vs. one heavy jacket so you can take on and off layers as needed.

I am going to need some directions to trailhead/ball fields. I have never been to memorial park before. I am coming from 45 south and google said exit allen parkway to get to memorial drive. Then I am not sure where to go.
