The purpose of this group is to reach out and create a community of Progressive Christians in the Houston area. What is a Progressive Christian? (It has little to nothing to do with political views) A Progressive Christian is someone that has a belief in God and wisdom of Christ, but feels that the Bible is most likely NOT the literal word of God.
A Progressive Christian does not base their Christian faith on simply believing that a series of events happened a long time ago, but has a logical faith in God that relies on the MESSAGE of the Bible and NOT the events it recounts. Belief in miracles and supernatural events are fine, but a Progressive Christian does not require these beliefs to hold to a deep and rich faith. For more information on what it is to be a Progressive Christian feel free to take a look around our meetup page.
The world is a difficult place for moderate Christians as we are bombarded by atheists on the left and evangelicals on the right. Both of these groups are becoming increasingly loud and the voice of moderate Christianity gets lost. The views of Progressive Christianity are often considered controversial to mainstream believers and I want to create a safe place where Progressive Christians can come together and discuss their beliefs as it can often be difficult to do this in many of the traditional churches of the area.
We can do this through Bible study, through the study of Biblical scholars (such as Marcus Borg or John Dominic Crossan), and through just chewing the fat and talking about our beliefs, doubts, and fears. We could also engage in good works in the community by helping needy causes and showing compassion through our works and not through rhetoric. The long term mission of this group will be up to the members and what we feel we are called to do. This group is open to all that already identify themselves as Progressive Christians, that are challenging what they believe but find that atheism doesn't sit with them, or those that are curious. Those that feel caught between the harsh words of militant atheists and evangelicals will find a safe haven here and sympathetic hearts and minds. I hope that we can share and develop our faith together!
