Monthly Print Competition - Special Assignment "Family"

Monthly Print Competition - Special Assignment - "Family"

You may bring up to 2 matted prints to the competition and enter them into one of the seven categories.

After the competition, folks meet at the La Madeline to "critique the critiques".
10001 Westheimer Rd., Houston, Texas

Competition Overview
We divide our prints into 7 categories:

Bronze - New members
Bronze Black & White
Bronze Color
Silver - Member with at least 1 year in HPS
Silver Black & White
Silver Color
Gold - Members with at least 2 years in HPS
Gold Black & White
Gold Color
Special Assignment - Assigned each month (Includes all levels)

If one of the categories has less than 3 prints, it will be moved up to the next higher level.

Each ribbon counts towards the following:
1. progression to the next category for the following year,
2. participation in the annual print competition,
2. the Excellence in Photography annual award, and
3. inclusion in exhibitions during the year.

Our club is somewhat unique relative to other clubs in that our competitions are judged by outside photographers who not only pick the winners in each category, but also give a short critique of each submitted photograph. Each of our club members values this critical feedback so they may improve.

Judge's comments were perceptive and insightful. Unfortunately, the meeting started a few minutes late and the judge were unable to finish his comments regarding photos in the Gold Color category. I suggest all future print competition meetings begin with announcements at 6:45 pm so that judging starts promptly at 7:00 pm.

Chuck Thompson was an great judge. He gave great insights and suggestions and I learned a lot from his critiques. A friendly, supportive suggestion: Tally the total number of prints before the judge begins critiquing and give him/her an estimate of how long they have to spend on each image. If a timer would help to keep the judge on time, the print chair or other designated member should keep time and let the judge know when they are at the half-way point and when they have used up the time for that image.
