Join us for a discussion of Hegel's Philosophy of Right

For our July meeting we will be reading the Preface and the Introduction to Helgel's Philosophy of Right.

This work is Hegel's most systematic presentation of his political philosophy.

A PDF of the reading is posted on this site. Go to 'More', then 'Files' and look for "Hegel, Philosophy of Right, preface & introduction"

Questions? Don't hesitate to contact Kent Guida.

See you on July 11!

Here is a taste of the reading:

Philosophy in any case always comes on the scene too late to give it [i.e. instruction to the world]. As the thought of the world, it appears only when actuality has completed its process of formation and attained its finished state. The teaching of the concept, which is also history’s inescapable lesson, is that it is only when actuality is mature that the ideal [das Ideale] first appears over against the real and that the ideal grasps this same real world in its substance and builds it up for itself into the shape of an intellectual realm. When philosophy paints its grey in grey, then has a shape of life grown old. By philosophy’s grey in grey it cannot be rejuvenated but only understood. The owl of Minerva begins its flight only with the falling of dusk.

A note on the text:
The main paragraphs and the indented "Remarks" were written by Hegel himself, the "Additions" were compiled by his student Eduar Gans based on notes from Hegel's lectures.
