Rice Science Café - "Cooking with Metals"

Speaker: Emilia Morosan, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Physics and Astronomy

Rice Science Café - "Cooking with Metals" Tuesday, November 5, 2013

6:30 PM  to 7:30 PM

Black Labrador Pub

4100 Montrose Blvd.

Houston, Texas, USA

Nature offers a finite and yet generous pantry of ingredients, many of which are metals. In designing synthetic recipes for metallic compounds, we often mix chemicals to see what forms. This often leads to serendipitous discoveries, many of which make their ways into applications —the smartphones and digital cameras, the MRI or NMR instruments, maglev trains, etc. Fundamental research and technological advances thrive on both the successes and the "failures" of cooking with metals.

This is a really fun meetup, but it could be even more awesome, re: getting lost etc. I have a couple suggestions for the meetup page advertizing the event:

    1. It's not obvious if you're new to the area where to park for the Black Lab, so it would be good to note that there's a (free!) parking garage with entrances on W. Main and Colquitt St. Park. After parking, walk west to the entrance on Montrose. I don't even think you need your parking validated if you leave after 7.

    2. The talks start fairly promptly, so if you're looking for food and/or drink, it's wise to show up 15-30 minutes early. Food can be ordered at the tables in the lecture room, credit cards preferred and gratuity (wisely) included in the bill.

    3. Kids seem welcome, but the crowd tends to dress up a little bit too. Depending on how you feel about that, you might want to trot out your bow-tie & blazer ;-)
