The bats emerge around dusk. Waugh bridge.

Directions: Exit I-10 on Washington Avenue just inside of loop 610 and travel southeast on Washington ... or ... exit Studemont south off I-10 as the Shepherd/Durham exit off I-10 has been under construction for a while. In either case, travel east on Washington to Jackson Hill Street about 6 blocks EAST of Shepherd ... or ... west on Washington to Jackson Hill Street about 4 blocks WEST of Heights Blvd. In either case, go south on Jackson Hill about 8 or 9 blocks until it ends with Cleveland Park on your right. This park has lots of free parking and a nice bridge over Memorial which we will all take once we gather up. From there, it is only 1000 to 1500 feet to where we will gather up again on top of the Waugh Drive bridge.

Bats put on a nearly flawless 20 minute show for us ... right on time.

The weather was great and the view of town form the bridge was nice. The bats had good timing and seemed to come out from under the bridge forever.

That seems very interesting. I went someone when I was young and saw bats. I just need some help with the directions they seem a little confusing as I don't live near the inner loop.

I rather join y'all for dinner somewhere I think that would be better. Is anyone else coming from the Southbelt Houston area?

Wow, 44 people are up for this gentle summer evening hike. It could be a fun evening. Just thought it might be good to have a flashlight for the walk back to the cars. I will be eating dinner about 6 PM just before the hike ... I'll set up something for those who might wish to join us.

You guys are going to enjoy this one. I nice gentle hike before we get there ... no need to be an athlete, but just enough to get the blood flowing. I'm also thinking about adding a dinner just before like with tonight's lecture ... I'll be checking opinions on this tonight.

I've done this and know best place to park and where to go. I can set this up for everybody. What I do not have at hand is a schedule for bat flight by date and times. Any bat people that want to help, can email me at [masked] and I'll get this up on the site. Friday or Saturday night might be best as they are not work nights. Other opinions? Thx, John

Doesn't the location have to be Waugh bridge?

Does anyone know weather-related issues that would impact this?

This is fun to see. Bring nose plugs, bats are stinky! I used to see them come out on my way from work. Made the mistake of driving by with the windows down one summer. But any biology (or Twilight) afficionados would probably really enjoy the experience. I know I did! ;) And with a little prep, great for emerging photographers as well.
