Trail Maintenance Hike in the Sam Houston National Forest

Enjoy a trail maintenance hike on the Lone Star Hiking Trail in Sam Houston National Forest.  This Trail Maintenance will most likely be done in the Magnolia section, starting at a Trailhead on FM 945.

Bring your daypack, three quarts of water, lunch, hiking shoes, hat, insect repellent, and clothes to fit the weather. And don’t forget to bring your sense of camaraderie, humor, and adventure!

We will meet at 8:00 am in the parking lot behind the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) at I-45 North and Greens Road for possible carpooling (then we will drive to the National Forest).  Look for a maroon and silver F-150 truck.   To reach the parking lot, enter the feeder off I-45 North, via the Greens Road exit, and then pass through the traffic signal at Greens Rd. Turn right into the first strip center you come to (look for Brown Sugar’s Barbecue) and drive to the end of the strip center. The parking lot behind IHOP is on the right.

Carpooling can be discussed when we park behind the I-HOP at Greens Road & I -45. We will see who actually shows up at 8 a.m., who has space for passengers, and who needs to take their vehicle to the trailhead.

About shoes, I would say that any shoes will do, as long as they are not sandals. High top hiking shoes are helpful to some on longer hikes, but this is relatively short-distance. Also, I would recommend long pants. This type of event is better for first-time hikers because of the relatively short distance involved. .

This is my first time hiking. Is there any other advice for me? How about shoes? I only have regular running shoes. do think it's gonna make it?

Regular shoes will be fine for this.

For all those who have not hiked much at this time of year, please bring a small backpack and 4 -6 pints of water, 1 pint / hour on the trail. And any snacks you need ( I don't usually break for lunch - that will be later) This event may go up to 6 hours, though you can probably leave early if taking your own vehicle. I will have plenty of extra tools, primarily loppers (clippers), but if you have something like that, you can bring your own.
I plan to be at the I-HOP NLT 8:00 a.m. and leave from the I-HOP NLT 8:10 a.m. We should be on the trail around 9 a.m. or so. Thanks for your interest.
