Open Rehearsal & Audition

Houston Choral Showcase is the only mixed community show choir in Houston (so guys, if you like to sing, this is for you, too!). This volunteer group sings choral arrangements of Broadway, pop, jazz, etc. and provides several performance opportunities per year. Open rehearsals and auditions are August 19 & 26 and September 9, 2013. Join us during these rehearsals and get to know us better. No prepared audition piece is required. This could be the performing group you are looking for!

Houston Choral Showcase is a mixed show choir performing choral arrangements of songs in a variety of popular styles, including pop, jazz, swing, gospel and Broadway. Choreographed movement and staging are an integral part of performances, along with vibrant costumes and props.

Auditions take place at our regular rehearsal location on two consecutive Monday evenings (
August 19 & 26 and September 9, 2013), and are open to men and women age 21 and over. No prepared audition piece is necessary, and visitors are welcome on these days with no obligation to audition.

The audition is divided into two phases. After signing in, candidates first meet as a group with the Music Director for an assessment of basic music ability (singing scales, participating in pitch-matching exercises, simple sight reading, etc.).

After that session, those invited to continue proceed to the general rehearsal. The entire group will start to work on new pieces, and the rehearsal will include both singing and choreography. At the end of the evening, membership candidates who wish to complete the audition will participate in a small ensemble to sing music worked on that evening.

No prepared solos are needed for the audition. Membership candidates will be expected to show evidence that they can:
* sing accurately
* hold their part in a mixed group
* learn music quickly and correctly
* blend with the group
* learn basic dance steps

What happens after the auditions?
There is no rehearsal on Labor Day (September 2), but thereafter rehearsals occur weekly on Mondays at 7pm (with a few extra ones here and there). The main Holiday Show is Sunday, December 15 and other performances start in mid-November. If you love to perform, Houston Choral Showcase provides multiple chances every season to strut your stuff! Is it too late to try out? If so when is the next one?

      Hi Grace! It's too late to try out for this season, but we'd love to see you in January for auditions. They will be held on Monday, January 13th and Monday, January 20th. For opportunities to see us perform, we'll be at the Uptown Lighting on Thanksgiving evening, and at the Zoo for Zoo Lights on Friday evening. Our Holiday show is Sunday, December 15th at 3pm at Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church, on the north side of I 10 between Wirt and Bingle.
