Photowalk: Arigato Houston! 20th Annual Japan Festival

We attended this event a couple of years ago and walked away with some amazing photos. I'll be working as a volunteer photographer this year, look for me wearing the "24Moves.com" vest. The festival is presented by the Japan America Society of Houston. There will be tons of food, stage presentations, tea ceremonies, martial arts demonstrations, etc. You can read more on their official web site at http://japan-fest.info/

Final Updates:

For those that are new, before most events, we send out an email with updates, tips, etc to help make your photowalk a fun time. Yes they are usually long. But 5 minutes reading this will help you enjoy your day tomorrow.

Another note for new folks: we don't do too many "big festival" type events. Typically we meetup as a group somewhere, but big events like this make that pretty impossible.

Last year, 28,000 people attended the Japan Festival. So even though there's going to be about 120 photowalkers, we are gonna have lots of trouble finding each other. We won't be meeting as a group for this run, so you have LOTS of flexibility to come attend any time on either day!

Parking: **DON'T** spend an hour doing loops in the zoo and Herman Park parking lots. Here's two great parking options. First, you can park in the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza parking structure. It's going to cost you about $7. Click here for a map to Herman Medical Plaza Parking.

Another parking option is to plant your car downtown and ride the rail. If you have kids with you, this is a fun way to get the day started. Downtown parking can cost you $5-10 depending where you park. The rail ticket is a couple of bucks.

Weather.com says tomorrow is going to be PC and zero chance of rain. So great chance to get some pretty blue skys and hopefully puffy clouds for a background in our images. High around 77dF, so wear just about anything that fits.

For gear, I suggest whatever fits in a light bag or that you're willing to carry. Lots of folks means lots of bumping into people. Probably not the best day for a tripod; people will end up tripping and knocking your gear over. Plus its going to be bright and sunny.

If you're planning to partake in the food vendors, bring cash. Just as with most festivals, you won't have much luck with a credit card.

The folks putting on the show will be doing frequent updates to keep you up to date on the schedule. You can check their twitter feed at https://twitter.com/Japan_Fest

Keep an eye out for me, I'll be wearing my 24Moves shoot vest (probably). See you there!

RSVP FAQ

Will we be meeting as a group?
As with all large public events with lots of people, it will be very difficult for us to meet in one location and walk as a group. Come when you can and stay as long as you want.

Is there a charge for this event?
This is a free public event, however you will find many wonderful things to photograph and enjoy. So feel free to donate a few bucks to the event.

What is the best option for parking?
I park in the medical center in the parking garage across the street on Fannin. Its about a 10 minute walk out to the festival; but it saves you driving in circles for 30 minutes looking for an open spot at Herman Park. Parking there usually costs about $10, and I've never had a problem finding a place to park.

How do I get there?
Check he map for the Hermann park directions: http://japan-fest.info/?page_id=115

Can I bring my family? Friends?
Sure! This is a great family event with lots for the kids to do (and eat).

Wonderful, too bad I didn't see anyone from the group that I recognized. Didn't get many pictures as I made the mistake of bringing my 5 year old Grand daughter. Next time I'll know better.

For folks who plan on capturing the dancers on stage, remember to bring your best flash unit to fill in as we will be shooting against a brightly lit background (the sun will move to the back of the stage in the afternoon.)
