Last minute details for the photo walk tomorrow at the Kemah Boardwalk.
If you don’t read anything else read this!!!! It is very humid at the boardwalk and will probably be warm from the moment you get there. This can cause significant problems with lenses fogging up. I was there last weekend at 5:30 and still had some lenses that were as yet unusable at sunrise at 6:20!! If you have a safe un-air-conditioned place to keep your equipment tonight I would strongly consider it. If you cannot do that then transport your equipment in the trunk (not in the car) WITH THE BAG OPEN so that the lenses warm up and defog faster. You don’t want to get up way before dawn and then miss shooting sunrise due to equipment problems!!
Don’t forget to wear sunscreen…..I know it will be dark when you arrive but the sun starts scorching pretty soon when it comes up. Mosquito repellant is also your friend down here.
The regular parking lots are blocked off on weekends to make them available for valet service later in the day. There is parking available in front of the Bullet (rollercoaster) and just past Starbucks in front of Saltgrass. If for some reason that parking is all full there is street parking avail on Bradford Ave between 4th and 5th Streets.
There is plenty to shoot even before official twilight starts so I’m going to do check-in a bit differently to make sure that everyone gets out on the boardwalk to shoot as the light is changing. I plan to be in front of Starbucks to start checking folks in at 5:15 so those that happen to arrive a bit early can go ahead and get started. I will stay there until 5:35ish to give stragglers a chance. After that if something happens and you arrive late you will have to track me down on the boardwalk to check-in. You can call or text me at[masked] and I will let you know where I am.
Lastly, the photo-ops abound. After you get you fill of sun up, the surrounding areas are ripe for exploration. The Boardwalk, the marina and The Lighthouse District are all great places to explore. I’ve attached a link to a crude (very crude – I need Google map lessons if anyone has time on their hands, lol) map that shows these areas. Blue is the Boardwalk, yellow is to the marina and red is the Lighthouse District. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=210887170994996716960.0004df10cc876918510a6
I hope you enjoy yourselves!! See ya tomorrow dark and early!! (Sorry I just couldn’t resist!)
The Kemah Boardwalk is known for it's daytime activity and great night photography opportunities, but it's also a great place to shoot sunrise, especially in the summer. The sun rises over the water when you shoot East off the boardwalk.
The early morning boat activity creates some nice opportunities as well. The rest of the boardwalk and the surrounding area is good fodder for morning light. You'll be able to fill your card with fantastic images before the heat gets too bad!
According to the navy sunrise will be at 6:20 and twilight will start at 5:52.....so we will meet at 5:30 for check-in to allow everyone time to pick a spot and set up before twilight starts. We will meet in front of Starbucks. The management has agreed to open an hour early for us at 6am for those who still need your morning jolt!!!!
