DIY Workshop: DSLR Pinhole in a Cap (and lunch)

April 25th is 2010 World Pinhole Photography Day. We'll be celebrating by turning our highly sophisticated DSLR cameras into pinhole cameras. Then we'll head outside and start shooting some pictures like they did in the good old days (well, almost). For this DYI, you need to bring a DSLR body cap to the event. We'll be drilling a hole in the cap and converting it into a pinhole lens. So go buy a cheap cap before you arrive! You can buy off-brand caps at camera stores and Amazon: http://bit.ly/ahHwlJ... Our project will be based on the many DSLR DIY Pinhole projects, such as this one: http://photocritic.or.... Disclaimer/explanation: Houston Photowalk DIY Workshops are opportunities for members to walk away with an unusual and interesting projects after a group discussion on a specific photography subject. DYI Workshops are fundraisers to help pay for meetup fees, supplies and movie theater rentals for photo exhibits. Your payment for the workshop will automatically appear on the group's budget screen.

This was my first meetup and everyone was very friendly and helpful (even assisting with my lens). Unfortunately, I had to leave early, but I'll definitely be taking more pinhole shots. Looking forward to the next one. :)

The event was a lot of fun, by creating an old fashioned camera from our SLRs.

For those who had to leave early: THANKS for attending, it was a great class and hope everyone had a good time. Feel free to post any new pictures you create today on the photo album and to the Photo Exhibit coming up in May!

I bet a lot of folks are doing this project for next Sunday, not just our DIY group. So they are probably wondering why all the body caps are getting bought up all of a sudden. :)

When you are (still) looking for an off-brand body cap, I bought one for Canon at Camera Co-Op for $3.24. Earlier last week, Camera Exchange ran out off Canon body caps.

12:30pm might work, but won't leave you much time for shooting. The group lunch might take 30-45 minutes. Once everyone is done eating & discussion, the drilling will begin. Reminder for everyone: bring a BODY cap, not a LENS cap. :)

I'm on the "maybe" list - leaning toward "Yes" depending on how late it goes. I have another thing to get to at about 12:30 PM or so. Any idea how long? Like the Angela, I'd love to know if I'd get the "basics" and still be able to leave at about 12:20 PM or so.

(I'm an experienced photographer - but never done pin hole stuff!)

Hi, I'm new to the group and wondered how long this event lasted? Or if it would be ok if I needed to leave at 12:30?
By the way, I think it is a fun idea.

Dahlia: Yes, also bring your camera and a tripod. If you don't own one, you can pick up a small table-top tripod for $5-10 and will be fine for this project. Wal-mart, Target, Microcenter, Fry's, and most camera stores carry them.
