Photowalk: Sunrise Over Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier

The beautiful pano by Srini Sundarrajan is a wonderful example of a recent "Must Have" portfolio photo for Houston Photographers: Sunrise over the Galveston Pleasure Pier.

About This Photowalk

We will start at 5:30am, enjoying some quiet time shooting low-light and long exposure shots of the beach and water. If the weather conditions are right, we might get some plane fly-overs and a few stars.

Sunrise will be around 6:20-6:30am or so. As the sun starts to rise, you can pick the perfect location to nail your morning sunrise shot. We will stay pretty close together, at least within shouting distance for those who would prefer not to be out in the dark alone.

Parking

You can park along the sea wall or across the street. Remember it's going to be dark so bring your flash light.  Also, please wear some light-colored clothing so it will be easy to find the body if someone gets hit by a car.

Tips For This Event

  • LOOK FOR MY SUV.  It's a black Ford Escape with a roof rack and grill guard.  I will have a stack of bottles of water near the truck for anyone that forgot to bring some.  Even though this will be early in the AM, its still going to be hot, stay hydrated.
  • You will be shooting near sand and wind. I strongly suggest you don't swap lenses during this shoot.
  • For best image results, bring a good sturdy tripod and your favorite trigger.
  • Bring an extra set of clothes if you plan to do additional photowalking during the day. If you get wet and/or sandy, you'll want to swap outfits rather than have sand in your undies.
  • Drive to the location with your AC turned OFF and windows rolled DOWN. Also keep your camera bag open and lens cap popped off. This will help you and your gear acclimate to the ambient temperature in Galveston. Otherwise you'll be miserable and your lenses will be fogged.
  • As with all events at HoustonPhotowalks, this event will not be canceled for rain. So check the weather and dress appropriately. Bring plastic bags to toss your gear in if it starts to pour!

    For Historical Context (from Wikipedia):
Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is built 1,130 feet over the Gulf of Mexico, where the original Pleasure Pier stood from 1943 until it was destroyed by Hurricane Carla in 1961. More recently, it was the site of the Flagship, an over-the-water hotel built in 1965 that was demolished after Hurricane Ike in 2008. The original Pleasure Pier featured rides, an arcade, an aquarium, concessions, a large ball room, named the Marine Ballroom, and fishing at the end of the pier. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier had its opening on May 25, 2012.

I love Houston Photowalks! What a great reason to get out of bed at 3:30 on a Sat morning. Knowing a number of my fellow photogs were out there doing the same thing go time motivated. Great directions and tips/suggestions for the outing. I had everything I needed. Only suggestion for future is bugspray - I brought but others may have found helpful.

Great idea for a photowalk. This was something I had planned on doing this summer anyway but I'm afraid I would never ever be motivated to do on my own. But knowing 60 others had to get up early and drive in the wee hours somehow made it better. I like the idea of landscape and nature shoots and it was great just to see a sunrise once in a long time.

Agree! Having a group of people going got me motivated to get out of bed.

as said before, it was fantastic meeting with 60 others and patiently waiting for the sunrise - perhaps the large crowd scared the sun from giving us a terrific "sunrise" but we all have fun visiting and shooting everything else in sight.... THANKS again for three terrific photo walks in two days

Good to get out and notice things. Photography makes us aware of the world around us. It is a needed respite from our busy schedules.

This was my first experience doing a "Photowalk" and I'm glad I did it! It was really nice seeing soo many like-minded (and clearly talented) individuals up and taking photos early on a Saturday morning. I'm looking forward to more opportunities to hang out and take photos with the group. The only thing I would suggest, is to possibly have a quick, 5 minutes or less, meet-and-greet? In this meeting we could discuss the plan and if others will move to different locations afterwards, etc.. As I was busy taking 600+ photos around the area, I looked up and everyone was gone; one straggler was also still there. It would have been nice to find out where everyone disappeared to - whether to breakfast or another location, etc.. However, it was still a good time and I will definitely join the group again. Thank you for organizing the event! See you all next time!

Even though there wasn't a spectacular sunrise over the pier this morning, a lot of photowalkers took gorgeous photos.

a very different experience for me-I am not NOT a morning person. Too bad there was a lot of cloud cover-it diluted the sunrise show.
