NP101: Introduction to Night Photography (FREE)

  • February 26, 2014 · 8:00 PM
  • Your House

Hey HoustonPhotowalk peeps... Steven Christenson here of StarCircleAcademy. Trying to take up a little slack while our beloved Joe is recuperating.

If you'd like to get ideas and some practical information on starting out in Night Photography, you're welcome to join a free webinar.  FREE!  You get to sit at home (or the office, or the sauna if you so choose) and participate via your desktop or diesel powered abacus - wait, that abacus might not work.

This FREE event is at  8:00 PM CST

This webinar would be great for you if you want to find out if distance learning is viable way for you to learn. It's FREE.

It's really informal, drop in, hang out, leave when you wish.  You won't have to say a word or hardly lift a finger.  We'll give you a 10,000 foot view of Night Photography ideas and principles and attack a handful of your questions.

For details about this webinar and to register please read here.

NOTE: While you're free to indicate your intent to join here on meetup, click THIS TO GET ACCESS TO THE WEBINAR.

Did we mention it's FREE.  If you want to check out other stuff we're cooking up... including a week long workshop on the Outer Banks of North Carolina this April, by all means check out the site.  Sign up for the workshop before rates go up in March (we have to have our final counts by then!)

Thank you all for a great turnout. If you haven't done so, I'd really appreciate it if you'd fill out the survey... even those of you who had trouble attending or hearing if you were able to attend.

Nope, a link to the survey. ;)

      March 5, 2014

    • Krys W.

Sorry, to clarify, I didn't see a link to the survey in your follow up email, but saw the link to the survey here on Meetup in this comment thread. Perhaps including the link to the survey in your follow up email would cover all of your bases? :D

      March 5, 2014

  • Steven C.

Oh, hey. I forgot to mention that 19 people completed the survey and were entered in a drawing. Congratulations to Medha and Tatiana who won the prizes they requested in the survey: For Medha that is Catching the Moon Webinar and for Tatiana the Astrophotography 101 Webinar.

    • Medha

Thanks Steven! I'm looking forward to 'Catching the Moon' :-)

Enough detail to tantalize, but wanted more. Obviously there are time constraints, and it was free.

Thanks for this discussion. I'll make sure to explain what "Manual Mode" is. I've already updated the materials to clearly separate what is achievable with "normal" vs "high end" cameras.

And Steven, no I didn't had any problems with webinar whatsoever!!

Turned out I was able to attend after all. I'm glad I didn't find a way to "un-enroll" from the event! I learned so much in such a short time. It gives me the confidence to start photographing the night, even with the basic equipment that I have.

Another great webinar from starcircleacademy.com! Thanks Steven for hosting this class for us. Now everyone is emailing me asking for a night photography outing in some scary remote uncharted part of Texas. Thanks for that. LOL

Waiting until 2 minutes before webinar to bring that up? Not terribly much we can do about it now.

The same here. Did you all get to the seminar?

      February 26, 2014

IMPORTANT UPDATE: iPad/iPhone/SmartPhone attendance option is NOT going to be available for this event. In selecting the new webinar provider, the best fit for this large event does not offer attendance via iPad (yet). The good news is you won't have to download anything in advance.

IMPORTANT UPDATE TWO: If you haven't registered for the event on the StarCircleAcademy site, - then you will NOT get the attendance link. The good news is, at least 53 of you have done that. Bad news: 120 or so of you have not registered on the site. http://starcircleacademy.com/webinars/np101

STEVEN: At least one of us is shooting film. Any tips for film users would be appreciated!

    February 19, 2014

    • Melody L.

I've been taking darkroom photography classes from the Glassell School of Art, which is part of the Houston Musuem of Fine Arts, but I haven't done much with night photography with film. I'm anxious to pick up some tips.

      February 19, 2014

    • Joe L.

Again, this class will not contain content specifically related to film photography. So you won't be getting hints and tips for that subject in this particular class. We are very lucky to have someone like Steven willing to teach this class and we will not be dictating his class content. If you need a night film photography class, a polite alternative to open comments is to contact the group organizers privately to make that request.

Steven: HUGE thanks for putting this class together and letting us attend for free!! I know the cost of the webinar software AND your personal time for putting the material together doesn't come cheap. So the HPW community really appreciate your work in our group!

I hope this is not over my head. I had to ask what a webinar was. I am a very newby to DSLR photography. But I love taking photos. And if I have questions I hope people will understand.

    3 · February 16, 2014

    • Joe L.

Webinar is a group meeting online at a designated web site, and we listen while in our own home. This way we don't have to rent a classroom for a meeting, or wear pants. Steven is a very cool cat and great teacher. Other folks who have taken his classes can pipe in, but I enjoy the webinars. And the NP101 class starts from the beginning and works up to more advance skills. The only time a class with Steven went over my head is when one of his advanced classes covered the math for predicting where the sun will set. But wasn't his fault, math is hard. LOL

    • Steven C.

Don't be afraid of a little trigonometry, Joe. But don't worry, there will be none of that in the Night Photography Introduction!

thanks joe. i work with a lady at Macys who turned me on to this site. i am here to listen and learn. i live in willis so i am not close to anyone that teaches. i bought a sony a58, only because i have a account at sony. have no idea if that is a good camera. but for now it is what i have.

    1 · February 16, 2014

    • Joe L.

No problem John, happy to help. And you really can't buy a "bad" camera nowadays, even if it's not a Canon. LOL I'm kidding folks, don't flame me. :)

      1 · February 16, 2014

    • Steven C.

FLAME! :-) By the way, I have a Sony, a heap o' Canons, and a Nikon so I sometimes get in flame wars with myself.

A bit confused, it says 8PM Central time here but at the Star Circle website it says:
Wed, February 26,[masked]PM PT (8 MT, 9 CT, 10 ET) So is it at 8PM or 9PM for us?

    February 16, 2014

    • Ron V.

Chris, looking at their website as well. If it truly starts at 6p PT, then it should be 8p for us. My gut is that they listed the times for the other zones wrong. But, this is only my opinion. :)

      February 17, 2014

    • Steven C.

8PM is the correct time for ya'll. Sorry to confuse.
