Photowalk: From Downtown Tranquility Park & City Hall to the Enron Building

NOTE!  SAME PHOTOWALK AS SATURDAY, EXCEPT ON SUNDAY

With so many people on the Sunday waiting list, I'm going to do this twice in one weekend!

SATURDAY vs. SUNDAY:

SATURDAY:  No group size limit, starts at 8am, photographers and family

SUNDAY:  Small group, starts at 10:30am, photographers only

Pick the day that works best for you, please don't pick both.

We will walk about 5 city blocks for this photowalk.  Starting at Tranquility Park, City Hall, the library, and then as far south west as you care to walk.  :)

ABOUT THESE LOCATIONS:

Tranquility Park is an easy-to-miss park, even if you live or work in downtown.  It's hidden behind two tall walls that feature dedication information (it is dedicated to the first moon landing, Apollo 11 in 1969).

Across the street is our City Hall and Herman Square.  You will recognize the 1930's style landing, windows, doors and architecture.

Next on our walk is the massive sculptures that surrounds our Houston Public Library.

For the adventurous who don't mind a 3-block walk, we'll walk down Smith near Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.  While there, we will visit the Enron building (at least, that's what I called it when my office was there).

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Just as with many of our photowalks, keep in mind that the locations we visit aren't always excited to see us.  We will be passing near private property.  You are least likely to encounter difficulties from security if you remain on the public walkways and not enter or walk on private property.  If you are approached, be friendly and move along.  Staying WITH the group will help too.

Any recommendations as to where to park?

    February 18, 2014

    • Joe L.

As with all photowalks, parking and logistics info is published / emailed a night-or-two before the event. :)

Won't be attending but I would agree with the Joe's suggestions for issues with overzealous security guards. Shouldn't be too much of an issue on a weekend and on this route but the ACLU offers some good advice: "When in public spaces where you are lawfully present you have the right to photograph anything that is in plain view. That includes pictures of federal buildings, transportation facilities, and police." That being said, obviously some public spaces like restrooms aren't a good idea to test your first amendment rights. Some good advice also is here:

Hello folks! With so many people on the waiting list, I scheduled Saturday too. Different time, different route, same starting place. Sunday is photographers only, Saturday bring the kids and family, will be lots to see and photograph! ;)

I think it's by user-id ... so the older you are with Meetup, the sooner you get the message. But like I said, the facebook group messages are instant and goes out to everyone who has their notifications set to email them about new posts.

Interesting, both my "regular" account and my meetup.com API test account both got the Battleship email at the same time -- and one account is about 3 years older than the other. Maybe they changed it to make emails start going out all at once again.

What time do you think we will be finished? I have to be in Humble at 2.

You can leave or stay as long as you want. No time limits. I try to plan for folks to have enough to see for about 2 hours.
