Houston Science Fiction / Fantasy Writers Monthly Meetup

This is a general discussion and social meetup.

Topic: Technique and the story: what are the different kinds of 3rd person Point of View, and how do they aid storytelling? How does POV impact the author's ability to show vs. tell?  When we say, "show, don't tell," what do we really mean?  If anybody has any examples, please share with the group.

A useful writing link: Write or Die

We will of course, also read and discuss the writing exercise if there are any takers. (See prompt below!)

Optional writing exercise prompts: impunity, bubble, cake or "Try it now."

About our Meetup generally: PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A CRITIQUE GROUP. Currently we gather for a low-pressure chance to socialize with other folks interested in writing science fiction, fantasy or horror. Topics tend to range from "why I'm here at this group and what I like to write" through specific questions about writing process and problems to discussions of sf/f/h works and debates on ideas of general interest relative to writing sf/f/h. We post an optional writing exercise, and if there are takers, we read and comment on their work.

To participate in the exercise, write a science fiction, fantasy or horror piece[masked] words in length based on the prompt below. If the text of the prompt is in quotes, the full text should appear somewhere in your exercise. If the text of the prompt is not in quotes, the concepts should appear in your exercise, but the phrase itself is not required. Bring at least 10 typed/printed copies to the meeting for people to read. If the prompt inspires you to a piece that is longer than 2000 words, bring the first 2000 words as your exercise submission. If you'd like, be sure to bring a copy of the complete work in case a member wants to read the whole thing.

Some of our members are seeking critique circle opportunities. Several critique groups have developed from the main meetup.  Ask during a meeting if there are any meet-and-greets upcoming, or any groups accepting new members.

Optional writing exercise prompts: impunity, bubble, cake or "Try it now."

I really enjoyed meeting everyone at the Feb. 11th meeting. I'm trying to take everyone's critique to heart and retrofit the work from the excellent suggestions offered. One suggestion though, if people would post their pieces here on the "Meet Up" site, we could all have an opportunity to read everyone's work ahead of time and utilize more meeting time for comments and less reading time at the restaurant. - I was very encouraged by the number of "I'd like to read more" comments I received, so I'd be happy to make as much as anyone can stand of man and computer as they orchestrate an interstellar civil war, with predatory aliens running into an even more predatory species... available, by request.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
