Houston Science Fiction / Fantasy Writers Monthly Meetup

  • July 8, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a general discussion and social meetup.

Topic: Characters: who are they? How do we get to know them as writers? How do we develop consistent personalities, or decide how they will react in extreme situations.

A useful writing link: Write or Die

We will of course, also read and discuss the writing exercise if there are any takers. (See prompt below!)

Optional writing exercise prompts: "Can this be?" or fry, select, when

About our Meetup generally: PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A CRITIQUE GROUP. Currently we gather for a low-pressure chance to socialize with other folks interested in writing science fiction, fantasy or horror. Topics tend to range from "why I'm here at this group and what I like to write" through specific questions about writing process and problems to discussions of sf/f/h works and debates on ideas of general interest relative to writing sf/f/h. We post an optional writing exercise, and if there are takers, we read and comment on their work.

To participate in the exercise, write a science fiction, fantasy or horror piece[masked] words in length based on the prompt below. If the text of the prompt is in quotes, the full text should appear somewhere in your exercise. If the text of the prompt is not in quotes, the concepts should appear in your exercise, but the phrase itself is not required. Bring 10 typed/printed copies to the meeting for people to read. If the prompt inspires you to a piece that is longer than 2000 words, bring 10 copies of the first 2000 words as your exercise submission. If you'd like, be sure to bring a copy of the complete work in case a member wants to read the whole thing.

Some of our members are seeking critique circle opportunities. Several critique groups have developed from the main meetup.  Ask during a meeting if there are any meet-and-greets upcoming, or any groups accepting new members.

Optional writing exercise prompts: TBD

Loved it. Didn't get the "pitch" before. Enjoyed the fiction submissions, too.

Love that even though I'm not writing sci-fi or fantasy our discussions always apply to any genre of writing! I always learn something new.

As I first-timer, I was really impressed with the level of talent and information shared by the group. I found the stories stimulating, and the conversation useful and interesting. The critiquing process was fascinating. A great experience! I learned a lot. Thank you all.

This is a great group. Sorry I chose last night to bring my paper. I didn't know that many papers would be there and how long it would take. This was only my second meeting.

Here is a fun contest for the worst first sentence in the worst novel ever written. I should excel in this!

Brand new to the group and Meetup in general. Please do not actually be a group of vampires or murderers.

Darn. Unfortunately, these events are now falling onto Monday's when I have my daughter. Until the weeks change again, I won't be able to attend for awhile :(. I did so enjoyed attending the few I did. Hopefully I'll be able to attend again when the times change.

I would like someone to read my science fiction "Chimeras" and tell me if it is ready to query an agent. I also have the first chapter in "My Gray World" and I would like to see if it is worth finishing. Unsure what to do on both. This will be only my second meeting in almost a year.

Is there a writing prompt? I may actually attempt a submission this time!

I think the prompt is "Well I can see the assassin failed." Austin would remember better than I do... Can I tag him in this or something?

Actually, I think that was Dominick's brainchild. I'm just using "fry, select, when."

New guy on deck! Looking forward to meeting other sci-fi and fantasy storytellers!
