Houston Science Fiction / Fantasy Writers Monthly Meetup

This is a general discussion and social meetup.

Topic: Sometimes we all find ourselves in that terrible slump - no writing, no ideas, nothing but blank paper or screens and frustration. Is this a healthy part of the creative cycle or the kiss of death to your magnum opus? How do you decide? What do you do to climb out of it or take advantage of it?

We will of course, also read and discuss the writing exercise if there are any takers. (See prompt below!)

Optional writing exercise prompts: mad, exception, gradual OR "I don't think so"

About our Meetup generally: PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A CRITIQUE GROUP. Currently we gather for a low-pressure chance to socialize with other folks interested in writing science fiction, fantasy or horror. Topics tend to range from "why I'm here at this group and what I like to write" through specific questions about writing process and problems to discussions of sf/f/h works and debates on ideas of general interest relative to writing sf/f/h. We post an optional writing exercise, and if there are takers, we read and comment on their work.

To participate in the exercise, write a science fiction, fantasy or horror piece[masked] words in length based on the prompt below. If the text of the prompt is in quotes, the full text should appear somewhere in your exercise. If the text of the prompt is not in quotes, the concepts should appear in your exercise, but the phrase itself is not required. Bring 10 typed/printed copies to the meeting for people to read. If the prompt inspires you to a piece that is longer than 2000 words, bring 10 copies of the first 2000 words as your exercise submission. If you'd like, be sure to bring a copy of the complete work in case a member wants to read the whole thing.

Some of our members are seeking critique circle opportunities. Several critique groups have developed from the main meetup.  Ask during a meeting if there are any meet-and-greets upcoming, or any groups accepting new members.

Optional writing exercise prompts: mad, exception, gradual OR "I don't think so"

Hi. I live in Katy. If I travel Westheimer all the way to Theo's, am I going to run into any dangerous patches along the way? I don't drive with my katana and shuriken in the car, so I might have to wait until summer daylight savings. Thanks.

I realize you asked about going on Westheimer, which would be fine, except for the 40 traffic signals you will encounter on the way. That will be a very slow route.

I am likely going to be a good 20-30 minutes late because of school. Apologies in advance.
