Pride Fest Volunteers Needed this Saturday

If you are involved with other local freethought groups, you may have already received this message, however, we are still short on volunteers for Saturday's Pride Festival. We are looking for volunteers to represent the various organizations in the Houston Freethought Alliance at Houston Pride.  Please e-mail [address removed] if you are able to help, either representing the Houston freethought community at the festival or parade, or in other ways. Festival Table We need people to take shifts at the festival table, handing out materials and talking to people about our local secular groups.  We are looking for people to take at least 2 hr shifts from 12:00-2:00 (including help with setup), 2:00-4:00, 4:00-6:00, and 6:00-7:30 (including help with breakdown).  We would like to have a minimum of 2 volunteers per shift so we need at least 8 volunteers.  It would be nice to have more, for example at least one per group all day. These volunteers may also be asked (but not required!) to circulate through the festival to hand out materials for the It Gets Better project (see paragraph below), both before and during the parade. Parade Walkers We need up to 25 people to walk in the Pride parade!  The parade starts at 8:15, but walkers must start lining up by 6:00 pm and everyone must be in place by 7:00 pm.  The parade itself usually lasts about 60-90 minutes.  Walkers are free to express themselves in terms of dress and signage, but signs must not display the name of any other organization except the Houston Freethought Alliance, or we will be charged for a separate entry.  Participants are welcome to carry signs that state general support of diversity and gay rights, like 'Godless for gay rights', or 'Atheists believe in you', etc.  We will need lighting for the parade, so bring flashlights or other portable lighting devices (not flammable please!).

Additional Info: It Gets Better looking for anywhere from 5-10 volunteers to pass out stickers and potentially other promotional items in support of It Gets Better, before and during the pride parade and festival. They ask that volunteers be at least 16 years old (if unaccompanied by a parent) and that they also be able to take photos of the parade (ideally also photos of people wearing  It Gets Better stickers) and send them to us within 24 hours. We will be featuring those photos on our social media outlets. We ask that volunteers come dressed in It Gets Better shirts or colors (yellow or purple), and we will provide them with stickers upon arrival. Parade Schedule
  • 5:30 PM Floats are to be in their assigned positions.
  • 6:30 PM Vehicles in the Parade must be in position. Vehicles not participating must be removed from the line-up area.
  • 7:00 PM All organizations participating in the Parade must be in place and checked in. The line-up area will be closed to traffic. Entries not in position at this time will not be allowed to participate in the Parade.
  • 8:00 PM Westheimer will be closed to traffic. Lead entries will be moved to the Woodhead intersection.
  • 8:15 PM The Parade begins!
