Over the past five years, Latin Wave: New Films from Latin America has presented Houston premieres of movies from many of the leading and emerging talents of contemporary Latin American cinema. This four-day event features screenings, discussions, and appearances by filmmakers who are often visiting Houston as part of an international itinerary of festival presentations. Latin Wave has been praised for its strong programming and the unique opportunities it creates for the public to interact personally with festival guests. Many of these films reach Houston after winning awards at prestigious festivals around the globe, and some have gone on to become their country’s nominee for the Best Foreign Language category of the Academy Awards.

Latin Wave is programmed by artistic director Monika Wagenberg, a widely respected expert in the field of Latin American cinema. A native of Colombia, Wagenberg is based in New York, where she cofounded Cinema Tropical, a leading distributor of Latin American films in the United States. In addition to her work for the museum’s Latin Wave, she has been appointed director of the Cartagena Film Festival in Colombia, and she is the Latin American delegate for the Zurich International Film Festival.
