Lighroom 4 editing help needed

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I was using Lightroom 4 to edit some photos, and all was going well for the first dozen or so photos that I worked on, but then I must have clicked on, or set something, I didn't intend to, and I can't figure out what I did or how to undo it.

Now, when I go to use the crop overlay tool, I get the grid as normal, I am able to drag the borders to resize as I had been doing, but then when I try to lock in my desired crop by pressing "R", instead of the final cropped version I want, I get a greatly enlarged small area of the photo, and I am unable to save the crop I want.

I have tried to find out how to solve my cropping problem by searching Kelby's Lightroom 4 book as well as looking online. Maybe I'm not using the right search terms because I can't find the answer to what I did wrong and how I can undo whatever it was that I did.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you get the crop the way you want,
hit the crop tool icon again to exit the mode.
(I'm not familiar with the shortcut keys)

If I click on the crop tool again, the crop is not finalized.
