Nativity Concert Series: Flint River Brass

The Flint River Brass quintet officially kicks off the 2014 Friends Of Music season on Saturday, Feb 22, at 5 pm.

The same evening, beginning at 6 pm, will be a Grand Opening Reception for the ICONs in Transformation Exhibit at Nativity.  All who attend the concert are most cordially invited to the reception, which will include refreshments and a brief introduction to the exhibit by the Artist.

You will be surrounded by many of these beautiful icons during the brass concert, and for many weeks following, as the exhibit extends through Easter Sunday (April 20).

More on the exhibit may be found at http://nativity.dioala.org/dfc/newsdetail_2/3163454#.UuZvA39OKSP, as well as updated on the front Nativity webpage, and at al.com.

All concerts and services are free and handicap accessible.

The Flint River Brass provided an evening of lively music and clever witticisms. I especially their introductions to each piece. We were given a wonderful sample of brass pieces composed by Ewald, Bach, Ewazen, Holst, and contemporary pieces by Nick Lane and Kevin McKee. Thanks to Suzanne Purtee for playing Handel's Organ Concerto in B Flat during the brief intermission. The program closed with a lively and toe-tapping version of Sweet Georgia Brown.

The concert was followed by a reception for Russian born artist Ludmila Pawlowska's exhibit, Icons in Transformation. The exhibit will run through April 20th.

I arrived at 4:45pm but could not find the group, despite walking the church aisle, standing outside for ten minutes, and inquiring with the door greeters. Perhaps next time we can meet at the entrance inside at the fountain where the door greeters stand or outside the doors at the bench.

The church really showed hospitality with this concert, meet and greet, and moving icon art exhibition.

Sorry you couldn't find the meetup group but we were scattered about the Nave due to the large number of people attending. I held the pew for as long as I could but finally folks started asking if they could sit in the area being saved (first come, first served). I arrived around 4:15 and by 4:30 it was beginning to get crowded. A few of us met during the reception but quickly dispersed to mingle with the other attendees and the artist. For the future, I've posted the concerts as "non-hosted" events.

Does anyone plan to rendezvous at Sam and Gregs before the concert? If not, I'll go back to the original plan of getting to the Church of Nativity around 4:30 and holding some seats.

I'm passing on dinner. Thanks for arranging. Can we park at the church?

    • Debra

There's a lot across the street but it fills up fast. Usually, there's enough off-street parking within reasonable walking distance.

I haven't heard from anyone about meeting at Sam and Gregs' so I'll go back to the original plan of being at the church around 4:30 and holding some pew space.

Julia: I do not mind assisting once we have a designated rendezvous spot. How will we be able to spot your friend, for ex, does he/she use a wheelchair or a walker? A vague generality should suffice for anonymity purposes.

I have put this on my calendar to attend. Will try to spot you there.

I'm up to going for dinner or coffee. I'm interested in sitting with you, Debra. Where do we all meet?

Let me know if anyone is interested in eating at a local, downtown eatery following the icon talk and viewing, and I'll make arrangements.
