Wappinger Creek Post Derby Paddle

If the weather is bad, I will reschedule it at a later date.

LEVEL 3

There rocks so no Kevlar or fiberglass boats!

For those who don't want to paddle with the crowd on the day before their Famous Race. We will be going out the day after the race for a quieter run.

Pleasant Valley to Poughkeepsie, NY

8 mile Run
moderate
moving flat water
No Rentals must have your own!

Finish line in Greenvale Park, Rt. 376, Poughkeepsie. 8am-3pm. Free for spectators.

The creek flows in a north–south direction on the eastern side of the Hudson River. The creek's source is Thompson Pond near Pine Plains, and it heads southeastward towards its mouth in the Hudson River near New Hamburg. Along the way, it goes through fluctuations in width and follows an erratic path; in Wappingers Falls, it forms Wappinger Lake, a man-made reservoir. The initial .25 mi (0.40 km) of the creek runs through rocky, steep, wooded terrain. However as it approaches the Hudson it enters the river's tidal range, and has sandbars, mudflats and marshes. The creek is also home to numerous species, and is an important spawning area for anadromous fish, which thrive in the creek between April and June. Largemouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, red-breasted sunfish, and brown bullhead, however, are resident species. Also, the creek is annually stocked with various species of trout for the purpose of recreational fishing.

We will car pool from our house at 9:00 AM

do you have room for beginners? If not can you direct me to a group? I've done some ocean kayaking and know the basics..comfortable in the water..did some white water rafting..

Stew - Yes, you do need your own kayak. EMS rents them, for one. We're doing Cold Spring marsh tomorrow - a perennial favorite, and very easy paddle. Sometimes we add in a stretch of the Hudson for people who want to get a little more exercise than the marsh provides. We go back to a little waterfall at our furthest point and have lunch there.

Garrett- Thanks for the loan of your windbreaker. It was just the extra protection I needed. And don't worry - I didn't hurt the vintage lift ticket.

I didn't make our first paddle in the Great Swamp, so it was nice to finally get out and start my season of paddling with friends! USGS water level was about 4.25 ft. for our paddle (it had peaked around 4.37 ft. late the night before). It turned out to be one of our easier runs here, since there were less obstructions to interfere with our getting out of each other's way. Looking forward to the Housatonic next week - another beautiful journey through the trees.

Two questions - will my 14.5 foot boat be too long for this river and this water? And what time do you think we will be getting out of the water? I need to be home by 5:30, so am not sure I should do this. Thank you!!

    April 22, 2014

    • Vikki

Corey it is best to use a shorter bait but you can do it in a 14.5

Hey since you are going to run the creek on sunday why don't you all show up friday night at 4:30 just south of rt 55 by the trailer park where there is a 36" diameter tree blocking the river. We have been out there for three days clearing the creek of obstructions, Friday night is the last push. We had six people including two tree professionals cutting away tuesday evening. Its all volunteer.

Bob, I work in Manhattan. Sorry we were not there. We did a clean of the Saw Mill River today and next month are cleaning up the Hudson River. If you clean up Wappinger's next year. Give me the details earlier and I will send out an email to our members.

Have fun! I miss this run, miss all of you. It should be fast and furious with the higher water levels. Be careful, enjoy.
