Coffee with the Hudson Valley Skeptics Monthly Meeting

Hi everyone! We are going to make this a permanent monthly meeting. Hope plenty of folks can make it. For those who might be able to make an evening meeting more easily, we'll be scheduling a weeknight Meetup in the very near future for sometime around mid-November, in hopes of perhaps making that a monthly occurrence as well. The idea is that those whose schedule won't allow for a Saturday morning might be able to make a Tuesday night, for example. It will either also be at Barnes And Noble, or at some other place yet to be determined. If anyone has ideas for the nighttime meeting, let me know.

Thanks!

Dan

Here is a link to a great Skeptoid episode on the tools used by ghost hunters. Enjoy!

It was great getting to finally make it to another meeting. Looking forward to see what we can do concerning Carl Sagan Day and the Anti-Vaccine crew.

I enjoyed listening to the paranormal investigators who came to visit. Although, I don't feel our discussion level was at the same intensity it has been.

Not going to be able to make this as something has come up, bummer

Probably won't make this one. Work has been advancing on me lately.

Take a look at the Discussion Board here or on the Hudson Valley Skeptics Facebook page for some items we'll be talking about Saturday. Thanks!

I'll be posting a loose agenda sometime in the next day or two. Just a few topics I want to make sure we discuss. Once I do, feel free to add anything to it.

Hey everyone! Wanted to make sure you were all aware, we WON'T be at B&N in Poughkeepsie this time. The meeting will be at Adriance Memorial Library. I think this time I will be putting together a loose agenda, as there are a few topics I want to make sure we get to. Also, it seems likely we'll have an investigator from one of the local paranormal groups joining us. Should be interesting! See you all there!

Note the new location! Adriance Memorial Library, Market St in Poughkeepsie.

Hey everyone, still waiting for confirmation on the room at the library. Keep an eye on this space! I'm going to email everyone as well.

I'll confirm the location change tomorrow, I hope. The next day at the latest. In other news, it looks like we'll be joined by a member of one of the local paranormal investigation groups. Should be interesting!

I'm ok with that, what is the parking situation like there?

    February 18, 2014

    • Dan L.

At Adriance in the City of Poughkeepsie, plenty of parking in a lot they have off of Noxon Street (the main entrance is on Market but there is an entrance in the back off of the parking lot too). If it ends up at the Arlington Branch, which is on Haight Avenue near Raymond in the Town of Poughkeepsie, I'll have to check. More info soon

      Great thanks!

      February 19, 2014

  • Dan L.

I'm going to call the person who books the library rooms today, and will ask about Adriance Library and the Arlington Branch of the library. More info to come. Thanks!

  • Frank E.

    I am OK with it!

    February 18, 2014

  • Dan L.

Hey everyone, was thinking about looking into Adriance Library, or somewhere else, as a meeting spot instead of the B&N this time, just because of space considerations. We might have to eliminate the coffee aspect, obviously, but I think the group may have outgrown the space at B&N and might also want to look into something with more privacy. Please let me know if this is ok with everyone and/or if you have ideas for other locations. Thanks!

Is anyone available today to comment for the Journal article that will be running tomorrow about the paranormal event and the "science" of ghost hunting? I was asked but am behind on my work today so I can't. Let me know ASAP! On Facebook or [masked].

    Hey everyone,

I just posted some info about a few topics/events we discussed this weekend in the discussion section of our Meetup page and on the group Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/HudsonValleySkeptics). I'm putting this all here because it seems like the comments section of the individual meetings gets more views than the discussion page or the Facebook at this point. Go "like" the Facebook page if you are on there, and take a look at the discussion page from time to time. I'll try to cross-post as much as possible so those who choose not to Facebook won't miss any info.

    Thanks,
    Dan

I wanted to post this as a small amount of vindication. I knew I saw something about the banning of critical thinking. It wasn't Louisiana, however; it was Texas. It was part of the 2012 Texas GOP party platform. I found an article in the Austin Chronicle dated 6/27/2012. It has the full excerpt of the platform document which specifically mentions their opposition to teaching critical thinking. There are other tidbits too from the Republican party platform which should scare the crap out of any sane person. To anyone who wanted to see the document, here is the link to the article which also as a link directly to full party platform document: www.austinchronicle.com/daily/news/[masked]/gop-opposes-critical-thinking/
