Hike to Vernooy Kill Falls

New date due to the rain last time!

Distance is a 4 mile out and back moderate hike.

No mountains involved, but hike is steadily uphill on the way to the fall.

Hike will be led at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind.

The trail takes us through forest with quite a variety of trees: white pine; hemlock; chestnut, red and black oak; red, sugar, and striped maple; yellow birch; and mountain laurel. Vernooy Kill Falls is at the end of the hike. The falls drop about 60 feet over Catskill shale ledges in a series of cascades! Some of the ledges impound significant-sized pools. Feel free to bring or wear a bathing suit (no changing facilities) you can get into the falls if you like.

Directions:

Note: Google Maps - the supposed trailhead address (576 upper cherrytown road) doesn't seem to come up correctly on Google or Bing Maps. We will meet at the trail parking lot.

To reach the trailhead for Vernooy Kill Falls, follow Rt. 3 (Samsonville Road) from Route 209 (about 1.5 miles north of the junction of Rt. 209 and Rt. 44-55) 1.3 miles to Cherrytown Road. Turn left onto Cherrytown Road, continue for 3.6 miles to Upper Cherrytown Road. Follow Upper Cherrytown Road 3.2 miles to DEC parking area on your right.

Hi Pat - I'm confused. Who were you waiting for? This meetup group is meeting at Vernooy Kill tomorrow (Sunday) and don't have any Awosting/Minnewaska hikes scheduled (yet at least). We're you thinking of a different group?

    Hi Cheryl,

How about the Walmart parking lot on Rt. 211 at 9:00 a.m. I would like to be there a bit early for parking as that may be an issue.

    August 9, 2013

    • cheryl

Hi Marlene: sounds good. will park near Kohls and find you. car color and make?

      August 11, 2013

  • marlene

I have room for five/six if anyone is from Middletown or wants to drive to Middletown to car pool.

    August 8, 2013

    • cheryl

I would love to carpool from Middletown with you. Just let me know where to meet you. thank you

      August 9, 2013

  • marlene

    Paul,
Is there a number I can call in case I get lost? Thank you.

    August 8, 2013

    • Paul C.

Yes but I'm not sure it can be counted on. I will be trying to get there early and if I recall correctly, cell service at the vernooy kill area is really poor (though I did switch carriers since I've been there). I'll send you my cell in a private message just in case.

I have a minivan that seats 7 passengers. I will be coming from the Taconic Parkway& Route 82, traveling west on Route 55 over MidHudson bridge.

    August 8, 2013

  • Paul C.

Hi all - I set a limit of 16 for this meetup. My concern is mostly about parking there. If we have less cars we can have more people. I would strongly encourage people to car pool. I can fit 3 more in my car if anyone wants to meet at my house (I'm in High Falls). If so, email me to make arrangements.

The parking lot for Vernooy Kill is not tiny, but not very large either. Anyone else who wants to setup a car pool is encouraged!

    August 8, 2013

    • Paul C.

There's not much near there to park. The best thing (for people coming from south or east) would probably be one of the park & rides in New Paltz. If coming from North than a park & ride in Kingston would probably be best.

      August 8, 2013

    • Paul C.

P.S. I don't want to make it seem like there is no parking at the falls trailhead itself, there's just not 30 spaces.

      August 8, 2013

  • Jerry C.

I didn't know it had been cancelled. Good luck for me.
