Minnewaska State Park

We are going to go back to Minnewaska State Park for this hike. We will be hiking approximately 8 miles round trip over relatively flat terrain, primarily on the Carriage trails. We will go from Minnewaska to Lake Awosting.

Depending on group interest, we may go to Gertrude's nose or Blueberry run which will have more elevation - we'll gauge group interest when there. Bring lunch or a snack as we will stop for lunch half way through. Due to the length, this will be one of our longer trips - expect it to take 3-4 hours.

We will meet at the lower parking lot. The upper is more likely to be filled early and the lower should have more room. Look for Paul's bright blue Prius C for the meeting point.

There is a fee for the park of $8 per car (not per person).

For more information & directions, see the NYS parks website at: www.nysparks.com/parks/127/details.aspx (note - website appeared to be temporarily down - try again later in the week if its still not loading).

The other group completed the hike as well as going up Blueberry and making it to Awosting Beach. I led the group out there since I was the only I one who had gone before.

Some people didn't go to Beacon last week and the description on the meet up did say that we would be meeting at the lower lot since the upper lot would most likely be full.

So the weather is up in the air for Saturday. I will send a weather update by 8AM of the day of the hike. Depending on the weather we will either have it as normal, postpone it to an as-yet-undetermined date, or push it back an hour or two (i.e. if the rain is scheduled to end by 11AM or so, we'll just start later).

So please - check your email before driving out (for this, or any of our events).

Sorry Linda, but I won't be able to go. I just found out that I need surgery on my knee. I have a torn meniscus. I will be having surgery May 20. I hope I can make the Rosendale walk.

I have never really hiked. can I wear sneakers? i dont have hiking boots. Also, should I use a backpack or something to hold my lunch and waterr?

    May 6, 2014

    • Betsy

I plan on wearing sneakers for this hike, and yes, a small backpack or cross-body bag to hold lunch and water is a good idea.

      May 6, 2014

    • Paul C.

This one is easy for sneakers. I would recommend everyone bring at least 1 liter of water (2 is better). A backpack is best to carry that. You don't want to have to hold a bag while hiking.

Haven't been to Minnewaska for years. It's beautiful and looking forward to sharing the hike with new friends.

Hi Linda, You can definitely turn back. The Minnewaska trails that we will be on are very wide carriage trails which you won't have issues following if you do decide to turn back.

    • Hildy

Linda, I am in the same position. If we get tired we can walk back together.

I have the Empire Pass for parking. If someone wants to meet someone (perhaps the parking area for the Rail trail on 44/55 in Gardiner), you can save yourself $8. I can fit 3 passengers comfortably, 4 if you don't mind sitting in the middle of the back seat. Email me in case I don't look at the notices in time.
