DRAFT.LA: Startups with Great Design

  • February 20, 2014 · 7:00 PM

You must RSVP through Eventbrite to attend this event. Please CLICK HERE to RSVP.

In the startup world, the role of a designer is now more challenging, exciting, and critical to a company's success than ever before. Join us on Thursday, February 20 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm for an evening of pizza, drinks, and an inspiring conversation about the current state of design in the startup industry.

Alissa Walker, design writer and Urbanism Editor at Gizmodo, will lead a fireside chat with Jesse Haff, VP of Design & Co–founder at NationBuilder and Ben Handzo, Product Director at NationBuilder, as they share how design has helped them build, differentiate, and grow their company.

I was surprised to meet designers who didn't believe UX was a valid discipline in its own right!?

Though the conversation regarding NationBuilder and their clientele was interesting, I believe it was falsely advertised as a discussion about the "current state of design in the startup industry." To be honest, it felt more like an advertisement for NationBuilder than a discussion at all. They seem like a really interesting company doing great things design-wise and with their business platform as a whole, but I was hoping (as a graphic designer at a startup) this meetup would address larger questions about the role design plays in pushing a company to the next level or reaching a broader audience. These themes were lightly brought up, but there wasn't an in-depth analysis of WHY and HOW they did something that created a desired (or unexpected) result; in short, it seemed there were few learnings to pass onto other designers.
