Sunday Speaker: Atheism 2.0, Alain de Botton via TED Talk video & Discussion

Sunday Speaker Meeting and Potluck Breakfast*

Atheism 2.0, Alain de Botton via TED Talk video & Discussion

What aspects of religion should atheists (respectfully) adopt? Alain de Botton suggests a "religion for atheists" — call it Atheism 2.0 — that incorporates religious forms and traditions to satisfy our human need for connection, ritual and transcendence.

Continuing our summer tradition of devoting one meeting to discussion, we will watch a short video by philosopher-of-ordinary-life Alain de Botton and then open the floor for a lightly moderated discussion of how (or whether) we as humanists might implement any of his ideas.

*NOTE Change in meeting format For this meeting only, breakfast will be a potluck. If you enjoy socializing with other members of breakfast, plan to arrive between 9:00 am and 9:30 and please bring something to share. Coffee, tea and juice will be provided. The meeting will begin around 10:00 am.

Doors open at 9:00am for potluck breakfast and socializing.

The Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix presents its Sunday Speaker meetings twice a month on Sunday mornings.

We enjoy the company of our fellow Humanists and a lecture from a guest speaker and topic discussion ending by 11:30 a.m. Our meetings are free and open to anyone who is interested in learning more about Humanism.

Breakfast is offered for sale to members and guests for $5.00. For coffee only, the charge is $1.00. If you would like to have coffee and/or food, please pay at the welcome desk by the entrance door. Of course, donations are always gratefully accepted as well.

*Please note that being a member of this Meetup group does not mean that you are a member of the organization HSGP. Please consider becoming a dues-paying member of HSGP and supporting one of the largest non-theistic communities in Arizona. Membership entitles you to borrow from a large selection of books and DVDs (including DVD recordings of our Sunday Speaker presentations) from our Robert G. Ingersoll Library, and the privilege to vote for board members annually.

For your convenience, the membership desk is immediately behind the welcome desk at each Sunday meeting. Stop by to join or renew your membership in HSGP, or to update your records such as your email address.

Thank you! See you at the HSGP Community Center!

Interesting TED talk. Would lend itself to a series of 5 or 6 discussions.
