Acclaimed choreographers, dancers and filmmakers converge on Tempe Center for the Arts as CONDER/dance presents its Breaking Ground 2014, a Contemporary Dance and Film Festival, January 24 and 25 at 7:30 pm.
Tickets are $20 and on sale at Tempe Center for the Arts Box Office, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway.
The weekend includes two distinct programs featuring contemporary dance films interspersed with live performances from today's top choreographers and dancers. Artists include Chad Michael Hall from Los Angeles, known for his ground breaking work as member of DIAVOLO Dance Theater and Israeli dancer Nadar Rosano from Tel Aviv, whose appearance in the Festival has been funded by the Consulate General of Israel.
Attendees of the Breaking Ground Festival will experience cutting-edge contemporary choreography, multi-media collaborations, international dance films and extraordinary living "sculptures" revealed throughout the Tempe Center for the Arts.
Highlights include the screening of the short Swedish film "Outside In" from director/choreographer Tove Skeidsvoll & Petrus Sjövik, a new piece from New York-based Arch Contemporary Ballet entitled "Seasons of White" and a new work from company founder Carley Conder entitled "subtidal," inspired by the aquatic shapes and movement of Pete Deise's sculpture, "Urchin Spine".
"The Breaking Ground 2014 Festival is our way of getting the most current perspectives in dance and dance film to come to Arizona, giving audiences the chance to see the best of what's out there on the contemporary dance scene," Carley Conder, Artistic Director and Founder of CONDER/dance said. "Our festival panel has carefully selected works that represent pure physicality, exquisite craftsmanship and pieces that push the boundaries of current dancemaking. We will be able to see a vast array of unique voices creating art that is relevant to today's cultural landscape."
On Saturday, Jan. 25, the visiting artists participating in Breaking Ground 2014 will hold four master classes, sharing their choreography and dance techniques with the Arizona Dance Community at Arizona State University. All are welcome to attend or observe the classes. Call [masked] for more information.
