Rally for Marriage Equality- May 11

The right to love and to have your feelings recognised equally in our society.

The right to choose your path free from the strictures of tradition and religion.

The right to express your values in the love of another human being, no matter their class, race, religion, gender or sexuality.

The right to share our civil spaces.

The right for Marriage Equality represents a challenge and one of the most significant civil rights issues of our times: Where will you be in the fight for Humanist values of equality, justice, fairness?

The Rally is organised by a number of parties and community groups, and we need to represent Humanism when so many of our own values are at stake.

The rally consists in shared speeches and a short march through our central Perth malls. The HSWA will have its own banner there and, most importantly, you.

We had a good attendance and it was an opportunity to meet people. Some previous rallys/protests I have been to in the past started with a march from the assembly point and ended with speeches at the destination. It might have been better if that procedure had been followed for this one. Some of us had to leave for other engagements before the march and it is the march that the public sees.

That's a good idea to put to the organisers Des, I'll pass it on.

Thank-you Humanists, for showing your support today! The Marriage rally attracted new members, and allowed us to disseminate our brochure to a wider public. With our banner high, our name was promoted with the cause of equality to thousands watching as we marched through the Perth shopping mall. Importantly, we demonstrated solidarity not only with gay people, but with the Students for Free speech at Notre Dame, who are battling for separation of church from their education. Special thanks go to Erwin for his work on the Humanists' brochure, (and who marched in Melbourne) to Carmen for setting up our table, Christopher for holding up half our banner the length of two malls against a stiff breeze, to Martin, Caron, Des, Mike, Diana, Cate, Lawson, Salvatore and everyone who lent a hand and their support. It was great to meet some of our newer members- thank you Eman, Elisabeth, and again, Chris and Lawson!

Great news! It looks like our new logo (see top left of this page) is about to receive its first major public showing: Perth Banners has received the Humanist Society's order for a 2.5 metre long banner. That's alot of 'Humanism' :-) I hope as many of us as possible can make the May 11 rally and march under the new flag! It's really a huge step forward for the Society to be putting its name out there (and up there) and we should be proud of ourselves!

More importantly, it will mean we're doing our part in promoting fairness and individual rights. Come join us!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
