"Values and Meanings" Discussion and Potluck

  • Oct 19, 2013 · 2:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a discussion group for nonbelievers to talk about our individual values and the kinds of meanings we find in our lives. The goal is to create a safe space to share, listen, and explore together without debating, arguing, or trying to convince others.

The topic for the next discussion, October 19, will be TRANSITIONS.

Bring a dish to share (we have silverware and plates available).

We will start with a potluck at 2:30pm and begin the discussion at 3:00pm. After introductions and an icebreaker will be a brief reading about the day's topic. Then we will go around the room to give everyone a chance to share their thoughts on the reading and topic. Following that will be a moderated discussion to respond to each other's individual thoughts and explore further everyone's perspectives.

If you are willing to pick up someone when you drive to the meeting, leave information about where you are coming from and how far you'd be willing to drive out of your way.

Very sorry to miss it ... I am presenting a paper this Sunday in Chicago so I won't be able to make it but I wonder if you can post (or email?) the reading?

Ilana, here are the quotes we used:

Change requires a background of relative stability, because change is a matter of comparisons.
      - A. C. Grayling

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy, for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter into another.
      - Anatole France

If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living.
      - Gail Sheehy

All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward.
      - Ellen Glasgow

Sorry I missed it. I ran late with a student. Then I couldn't get signal to my GPS so I gave up.

What would be most useful if I were to be picking up things from a store? I'm going to be coming over from spending the morning helping a friend move and thus won't be bringing a homemade dish (don't want to risk having something sit in my car for hours) - if nothing comes to mind I'll bring cookies or something.

Too late. I'm going to come bringing a bag of raw sugar, to spite your food judginess! It's vegan and everything. Kidding.

Apologies in advance for any rudeness as C and I check the football score every hour or so.
