"Values and Meanings" Discussion and Potluck

  • January 18, 2014 · 2:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a discussion group for nonbelievers to talk about our individual values and the kinds of meanings we find in our lives. The goal is to create a safe space to share, listen, and explore together without debating, arguing, or trying to convince others.

The topic for this discussion will be HOPE and OPTIMISM.

We will start with a potluck at 2:30pm and begin the discussion at 3:30pm. After introductions and an icebreaker will be a brief reading about the day's topic. Then we will go around the room to give everyone a chance to share their thoughts on the reading and topic. Following that will be a moderated discussion to respond to each other's individual thoughts and explore further everyone's perspectives.

    Hi Heidi:
Jamie also offered to carpool with me, but it turns out I wasn't able to go this time. But I'd be interested in carpooling with you next time. It sounded like Jamie would be going out of his way to get to my house. I live on Rayne Ln, which is one block N of Henderson about half way between Kenny and Reed. My phone is[masked] if you ever want to call me. I'm an older person and am trying to learn to use this computer so tried to respond to Jamie but don't think I was successful and I may not be successful in sending this to you either.

    Thanks for responding.

Anyone going from the Reed/Henderson Rd area?

I live just off Henderson and Kenny. I could give you a lift if you haven't already worked it out with Jamie.

Emily, got your phone message, too bad you won't be able to make it, perhaps next time.

I wasn't going to be able to attend, but now I'm more optimistic.

Would showing up late (~3:30) be disruptive/problematic?

Come when you can! We'll be eating/chatting until 3:30pm. At 3:30pm we'll start the moderated discussion, so if you come after that you'll miss the introductions/guidelines and would have to catch up a bit on what's going on.

I am definitely a happier person since I left Christianity. I'd love to talk about it, but I have so much to do around here.......and coming there would just fuel my procrastination problem. :) Hope to be there next time.

I'd like to be there, but I'm trying to get over a cold (or sinus infection, or whatever it is I have).

Here is one among several quotes we will read, this one is by Robert G. Ingersoll:

When I became convinced that the universe is natural, that all the ghosts and gods are myths, there entered into my brain, into my soul, into every drop of my blood the sense, the feeling, the joy of freedom. The walls of my prison crumbled and fell. The dungeon was flooded with light and all the bolts and bars and manacles became dust. I was no longer a servant, a serf, or a slave. There was for me no master in all the wide world, not even in infinite space. I was free–free to think, to express my thoughts–free to live my own ideal, free to live for myself and those I loved, free to use all my faculties, all my senses, free to spread imagination’s wings, free to investigate, to guess and dream and hope, free to judge and determine for myself . . . I was free! I stood erect and fearlessly, joyously faced all worlds.
