Backpacks for Homeless Individuals

  • Jun 30, 2014 · 7:00 PM

The idea behind this project is to help local homeless individuals by providing them with inexpensive backpacks filled with useful items during the month of June. If you are interested in participating, please review the following steps and view the videos linked below that demonstrates the overall concept. The first step is to locate an inexpensive backpack (yard sale, thrift store, etc.). Then fill the backpack with inexpensive, yet useful items. Each filled backpack should cost no more than $20. We would love a photograph of your filled backpack (and it may help others with ideas). You can then opt to either deliver the backpack to a person you find who you believe would benefit from it or we can arrange to deliver the backpack on your behalf. We can also consider doing a group shopping trip together.

Possible useful items include:
Socks, peanut butter, plastic silverware, notebook and pens/pencils, food gift cards, toothbrush and toothpaste, crackers, deodorant, bar soap, wet wipes, shaving razors, combs, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, granola bars, easily opened canned goods (tuna salads, etc.), fruit juices or fruit cups, bottled water

We encourage people to bring filled backpacks that need to be distributed and anyone who would like to bring some items to help complete some backpacks to the World Humanist Day at the Garden Room on June 21st. We will use some time then to finish backpacks and collect the ones that need to be distributed.

A sample backpack donated by some of our members is shown below:

I missed the day to drop off bags (June 21)- is it still possible to give a backpack? If so, how? Thanks!

Are we meeting again on this? I have the following: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, 8 cracker and cheese snacks, 3 snack pkgs of cookies, 3 reusable water bottles, small bars of soap, coffee, 4 rice a roni packets to just add water, denture cleaner, 2 deodorants, 2 shower caps, 5 toothbrushes, and 3 hair styling samples (who knows?). If someone else has socks and other stuff, we may be able to mix and match? Jesse-could you call me[masked]-at home today til 1PM (monday). Thanks!

    How'd it go?

Lindsey, we think it turned out great. We have a healthy stack of filled backpacks (9 completed) and supplies/donations to fill a few more. We're going to try to contact the GJPD's Homeless Outreach Team to talk to them about distributing the backpacks and hope to have them all passed out by the end of the month.

Jesse... Tash and I want to do a backpack. I'll need to get it to you or someone to deliver. So, if we put this together on our own, what is the meeting on the 30th? Or is that just the end date of the activity?
    Thanks.

The Garden Room in the Commons, right?

Laura, yes, we can work on backpacks and pack them with whatever stuff people bring on June 21st at the Garden Room at The Commons [masked]/2 Road). It's located on the back side of the building and has its own entrance. We can talk about distribution plans when everyone is together that day too. Lindsey and I met up this weekend and shopped for enough stuff for a couple of backpacks and we have a couple spare backpacks that we can add stuff to as well.

I'm also going to search my house for items I don't use that would do well in the backpack. For instance, pens. We always have like 20,000 of those puppies in drawers. I'm sure I can spare a few..

      Great idea Lindsey....

I've done some shopping for one backpack already, but plan to do some more shopping this weekend. If others would like to join up to do some shopping for this purpose sometime this weekend, let me know and we'll work out a time and meeting place.

Wow! This is an awesome idea!! Is this as an ongoing project? Rather than having an actual date? I've been collecting stuff for a long time for the homeless, and delivered boxes of soaps or shampoos and lotions etc. but individual backpacks, love it!!

Lindsey, we completely understand that not everyone will be comfortable making the delivery on their own. I am sure that at least I can go with you sometime or if you would prefer to just drop off the backpack to us sometime, we could make the delivery on our own. Whatever you prefer, we should be able to make it happen.

Maybe one of us has say toothbrushes and mini-shampoos/lotions, etc. (like me) and others have something else. We could get together and mix and match once per month? That way not too much out of pocket? just thinking...
