The idea behind this project is to help local homeless individuals by providing them with inexpensive backpacks filled with useful items during the month of June. If you are interested in participating, please review the following steps and view the videos linked below that demonstrates the overall concept. The first step is to locate an inexpensive backpack (yard sale, thrift store, etc.). Then fill the backpack with inexpensive, yet useful items. Each filled backpack should cost no more than $20. We would love a photograph of your filled backpack (and it may help others with ideas). You can then opt to either deliver the backpack to a person you find who you believe would benefit from it or we can arrange to deliver the backpack on your behalf. We can also consider doing a group shopping trip together.
Possible useful items include:
Socks, peanut butter, plastic silverware, notebook and pens/pencils, food gift cards, toothbrush and toothpaste, crackers, deodorant, bar soap, wet wipes, shaving razors, combs, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, granola bars, easily opened canned goods (tuna salads, etc.), fruit juices or fruit cups, bottled water
We encourage people to bring filled backpacks that need to be distributed and anyone who would like to bring some items to help complete some backpacks to the World Humanist Day at the Garden Room on June 21st. We will use some time then to finish backpacks and collect the ones that need to be distributed.
