Weather update: there is a slight chance of showers forecast for Sunday morning. At this time, the cleanup is ON as scheduled. We will continue to watch the weather & will make a decision by 8:30am tomorrow as to whether to hold the cleanup. Will post a message on both Facebook & Meetup Sunday Apr 27 at 8:30 confirming whether the cleanup is happening.

Not unusual for me: confused. From looking at the website, it looks as if various groups all over the country are doing one or two events during the week. So collectively, some humanist-type group is doing something somewhere. And it looks as if we're doing this clean-up twice? Just how dirty (literally, not figuratively) is it???

Hi Nina. You're correct about the Week of Action: a collective effort by various humanist groups. HRI has "adopted" a stretch of Park Ave in Cranston as part of the RIDOT adopt a highway program. We do 4 cleanups a year, usually 2 in the spring & 2 in the fall. Since our first clean up is usually in April, we decided to link it to the Week of Action. We don't really get too dirty. We wear gloves & reflective vests (provided by the RIDOT). We pick up trash along the side walk for about 2 miles. Any items that are hazardous like needles, dead animals, etc. we don't pick up but report to the DOT. We usually go out for brunch immediately afterwards.

The first time we ever did it was the trashiest. Since then, it seems like there is less litter that accumulates. The last few times we've been out people have thanked us along the way.
