We will be discussing Humanist values and developing our own set of core values that are specific to Humanists of the Treasure Coast. Some ideas have already been gathered in the sessions that Fran Schmidt conducted a few months ago. Items mentioned at those meetings included: science rules!, do unto others, trusting, cautious, reason, non-religious, not anti-religion, question authority, responsible for out planet, the here and now not someday, power of the people, caring for all people regardless of beliefs, respecting diversity, humane, being and doing good for its own sake. We can also look to other Humanist organizations for ideas. There are a couple of good links on the Council for Secular Humanism's webpage athttp://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?section=main&page=declaration andhttp://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?section=main&page=affirmations. The Humanists of Florida Association has some stuff athttp://www.floridahumanist.org/currentissues.htm and http://www.floridahumanist.org/principles.htm. The American Humanist Association has some info athttp://www.americanhumanist.org/Humanism/Humanist_Manifesto_III. The Institute for Science and Human Values has the Neo-Humanist priciple athttp://instituteforscienceandhumanvalues.net/articles/neo%20humanist%20statement.htm. Check out these links and think about what is important to you so we can have productive discussions when we meet
