Why are you a Humanist?

Several reasons. First of all I'm an incurable skeptic who always seeks rational, scientific answers and rejects answers based on the supernatural. I also believe whole-heartedly that it is quite natural to be good without god. Who needs commandments when we've got the golden rule? I don't believe in eternal punishments or rewards. Being able to maintain my self-respect and the realization that I've made others happy is all the reward I want or need. This is the only life we get, so we'd all better make the most of it and strive to make the world a better place for our having been here.

What is your definition of Humanism?

A rational philosophy of life, informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by a desire to do good for its own sake and not by any expectation of reward or fear of punishment in an afterlife. Free of supernaturalism, Humanism holds that all values, whether ethical, social, or political in nature, have their source in human nature, experience, and culture. Humanism thus derives the goals of life from human need and desire rather than from theological abstractions. Humanism insists that humanity must take responsibility for its own destiny.
