Indian Tree Open Space is a great place for a summer hike in Marin. The trail to the ridge is comfortably graded and shaded by redwood, oak and Douglas fir. There is also a redwood grove on the crest, plus views of the surrounding hills. There will be some meadow walking, some shaded, forested areas and some time along the ridge to take in the views.
The hike is approximately 5.5 miles with a moderate 1200 foot elevation gain to the top of the ridge. This trial is dog friendly!
Afterward, we can reward ourselves with some libations and lunch at Hopmonk. Their outdoor beer garden is also dog friendly (and it's a beer garden), in case any of us have our pups along for the fun. Even though they are a pub, Hopmonk does have options for vegetarians and those of us with food allergies. They also have a fire pit, who is up for sneaking in some marshmallows? And did we mention beer and a full bar?
From Highway 101 in Novato, take the Atherton /San Marin exit and turn west on San Marin, which will become Sutro Avenue after the Novato Boulevard intersection. Turn right at Vineyard Road and look for the trailhead where the pavement turns to a dirt road.
