Special Kelp (Seaweed) Pickling Class

KELP PICKLING - A DELICIOUS ADVENTURE:

Since early times, home canners have enjoyed the art of pickling foods and now you can pickle kelp in Santa Cruz! We will pick a beach noted for a variety of succulent sea vegetables. Here we will search for our quest in tide pools and by boogie board. We will then return to Adventure Sports Unlimited to pickle as only a family group can do.

Wild foods are natural foods—grown without pesticides or human manipulation. Certainly, wild foods are the most organic of foods. Learning to harvest wild food brings a new twist to home cooking, parties and camping. We are going to break the myth of foraging as some kind of a hunter-gatherer survival training and show you how to create delicious gourmet dishes. You will learn that foraging is very satisfying when you become a  gourmet forager.

Wet suits will be needed to gather almost everything (they rent them).

The class includes an evening session on May 16 for planning followed by a day of pickling vegetables from the sea.

IMPORTANT: Paid members of this Meetup get a 10% discount.  This is not a private class for us so they will fill spots on a first come, first pay basis.

Please post questions in the comments section.

No you don't need a license to collect sea vegetables, but DO NOT pick up any animals, even a tiny limpet! Yes, there was a deadline to sign up. Call Adventure Sports Unlimited and see if you can sign up if they are not full. Ask for Jim and ask for the Meetup 10% discount. :D Also, talk to them about renting a wet suit if you do not have one.

Thanks! Also, in all of my naïveté regarding hunting, foraging, and gathering, I ask: "Does the Fish and Game code Section 7145 apply to sea kelp?" Also, the RSVPs are closed for this event.

The actual start time - based on the tides will be announced in the Friday night class. We'll probably finish more like 4:00 PM, but I'm not certain. Just didnt want anyone to have to leave before we were done.
