From my "Valley Planet" column.........
In what the cognoscenti and illuminati are calling a “shocking turn of events,” I was made aware of this year’s ANNUAL AAMU INTERNATIONAL FOOD AND CULTURAL FAIR...in advance!
Presented by the International Student Organization (ISA) [(256) 373-5614], festivities commence at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, 23 March at the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium, located near the Lewis Crews Stadium. Turn west on Holloway Road off Meridian Street, North, take the second right onto Parker Drive, and continue on to the gym.
ISA Prez Ayesha Forier relates: Ireland and Ethiopia will again represent and the crew hopes to introduce such Carib dishes as Trinidad’s Shark and Bake; St. Kitts’ Seasoned Breadfruit and Spicy Plantains; Conch Chowder; Goat Stew; and some novel Puerto Rican offerings.
Umdabu returns to perform (and lead!) their South African terpsichory, and Ayesha hopes to have the Spanish Club onstage, as well. Doubtless, we can expect some of the fair faves we’ve enjoyed in years past: Fried Plantain; Ackee and Salt Fish; Stewed Oxtail; Jollof Rice; Chicken of every stripe; Gungo Peas and Rice; Boiled Cassava…the mind reels.
Suffice to say, the bounty effortlessly makes up for your $5 entry fee. Huntspatch takes the “Year of Alabama Food” to heart!
