Re: [bike-252] Spares for Schwinn sporterra

Thank you all for so wonderful responses. No wonder I did post my queries and got so good and immediate responses. Good news is that it did work out for me. As Bhadra garu said that this is one of the common issue for this bike in one of the forums, I did contact RR Cycles in Bangalore and they did have a few similar ones which will fit by bike and I ordered two of them today.
As some of you had said, yes, it is some negligence and poor maintenance as well from my side. I need to be more attentive and taking more care for my bike. Will try to do the same from now on.

Thanks for the help once again.

Have good biking.

Regards,

Giri

http://www.derailleurhanger.com
Find the one that is made for your Schwinn frame. If you have friends coming from the US/UK they can get it for you. Not sure if it will be considerably cost effective.
In any case, the root needs to be solved. I didn't know that riding an improper gear combination could result in stress in the hanger. But it sounds logical. Hangers were made for protecting the derailleurs as well - from stresses and shocks. Apart from riding the correct gear combinations, make sure that the derailleur is properly tuned i.e. it shifts perfectly without any misalignment with the gears.

Hi giri,
I have the same bike as you and even bought around the similar time (May 13). I have also gone through 2 hangers. However I have identified why they used to break. It was lack of maintenance. You should lubricate your chain (using proper cycling lube not oil) once every[masked] km. And every 500km or so use degreaser to clean your chain and derailleur and lube it again. Invest in a degreaser, the jugaad shampoo trick doesn't work as well. Get your gears tuned too. Invest in a proper cleaning kit. I use this - http://www.parktool.com/product/chain-gang-cleaning-system-CG-2-2 .As Arvind pointed out it could also be because of improper usage of gears. There are 21 gears on your bike however only about 9 combinations are recommended.

Dear Giri, have you been able to figure out as to why the derailleur hanger is breaking? How many times has this happened? Is it due to riding in the wrong gear? Or is it due to improper fitting? There is a lot of strain on the hanger while riding in the wrong gear. Originally, derailleurs were welded to the frame and the stress on that used to create issues for the frame. Which is why, they are now a separate component. Suggest you meet the mechanic Krishna at the HBC bike station first.

Subject: [bike-252] Spares for Schwinn sporterra

Hello all fellow bikers,

I am fortunate enough to be part of this group. Even though I did not participate much in any of the events, I have been closely following with you. I am in regular contact with LB nagar gang of HBC.
I do have couple of queries:
1. I have a Schwinn Sporterra 2012 hybrid, which I bought early this year (its not even one year). I must have rode about 1000km already. I usually do short distances and some times commute (about 50km two way). The problem with this bike is that the derailleur hangar is breaking and is very expensive. Its only bike affair that can order these from some where in Europe. I do not think any one else in Hyderabad or India has these. Let me know if you have any idea where else I can get them from. Bike affair is too far for me (about 40 km).
2. I am not sure why is the its hanger that is breaking every time, the first time, its only while shifting gear it broke. There was nothing bad that was done. The second time it was only when I had taken the bike over a small gutter and when the bike had shaken a bit and I too fell down and had minor injury. I heard good reviews about this bike, but its broke twice within a year at the same place. Is it me, or the bike which is causing the trouble here?

Any ideas to help me here? Thank you.

Regards,

Giri
