I love my friends but.... Message Board › Annual BBQ This Sunday!
Hello there folks,
Friendly service announcement here from your I Love My Friends But Organizers. We're working away behind the scenes to get everything ready and hope you're all looking forward to a great event on Sunday!
First up, getting there:
Those of you that know Spanish Banks know that parking is at a premium during the summer. With 350+ people signed up to attend right now, most of you aren't going to get a space. We hate the thought of you missing out on the fun because you couldn't find parking! Please consider other options to get to Spanish Banks. I've put together a few ideas below. If you guys can think of anything else please do post comments on the event page.
The 4 & 84 buses run along W 4th to UBC. You can get off at Tolmie (4) or Blanca (84) and walk for about half an hour to where we'll be set up OR you can connect with the C19 at NW Marine Drive which will drop you off at the east concession/Spanish Banks Bus Loop. From here it's around a 20-25 minute walk to the last parking lot.
Bike: If you're within cycling distance and your potluck dish is packable, this would be a great way to get there.
Bus/bike: Combo of the above! You can bike from W 4th via the buses above, but there are many routes into UBC via W Broadway, 16th etc where you can also bike from.
Car/Bike: If you're coming from farther out and have a bike rack. Mount the bike on your car and park on West 4th or nearby and cycle down to us.
There will be little parking at the beach of so one of these suggestions is highly recommended.
Essentially, it's whatever works best for you! Please plan out your journey on Google maps or Translink.com as the buses (especially the C19) will be less frequent on Sunday. If driving is the only option you have, would you consider carpooling with other members? If yes, post your comments and we'll leave you to sort that out amongst yourselves. If you're accepting a ride from someone else, a little gas money may be appreciated by your kind driver ;)
We are usually situated in the last or second to last parking lot. Our ideal spot is at the far end of the last parking lot. There are trees and tables there. If this is full we will be in the open field near there. There will be a red and white England flag draped in an obvious spot. Look for England and all will be well.
What you should bring:
A potluck dish to share (if you're biking, something you can pack or make when you get there).
A blanket or chair to sit on (choose carefully depending on how you're getting here).
A bag for trash to take away and recycle/dispose of. There are bins nearby but these can get full and we don't have the resources to take your trash away for you.
Games. We kindly request that you leave the frisbee at home as this will get quite chaotic with so many of us there.
Cutlery, a plate and drink cup.
We will have extra plates etc. if needed but please bring your own if possible. It will save on garbage, waste and cleanup.
Feel free to bring something you'd like to cook. We will also be cooking burgers by donation on a first come first serve basis. Get there early if you'd like one as we might just run out. Proceeds will cover costs of putting the event together and the monthly dues Simon pays to Meetup to run the group.
When you decide to call it a day please take a look around to ensure you've got all your personal belongings and have picked up all your own trash. We are immensely grateful for this as it makes the cleanup we'll be doing at the end a lot easier.
If you have any questions, please read the event page to see if your answer is there, if not, post away in the comments and one of us will get back to you soon.
Thanks for taking the time to read all this folks. See you in the Sunshine on Sunday!

Parking. Man, I didn't think about that. I travel heavy and was fully planning on bringing enough toys to keep all my new friends amused for a few minutes at least so I need my car - but it will have 5 free spots (4 unless 3 of you have thin hips) and I'll be coming from Boundary & Grandview area at about noon - can't guarantee a ride home as I'll be heading to West Van and probably late. Maybe this will help a few of you, lemme know.
